Game saves are stored inside Windows Registry.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Degenerals\TankMechanicSimulator

You can create new additional profile in the game, to keep old save on first profile and start new game with second. Also, you can use following "hack" to dump registry data into file.
In game (for example when you are in Warehouse), press ~ (tilda) key and use following command:

savegame 1

then, it will export save data into file:
SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\TankMechanicSimulator\TankMechanicSimulator_Data\StreamingAssets\Internal\tms1.data

To load game, use command:

loadgame 1

Why on earth do you store the save data in the registry?!

Saves dont get stored in registrys. References to the game do, but not save files.

Then the dev is wrong and doesn't understand what a reference is versus a save, but yes, they seem to be stored in the registry for some ridiculous reason. I deleted what I found, booted up the game, and my saves were gone. Restored the backup, saves were back.

Apparently Unity used to default to the registry for saving games, I don't know if that's changed, or what the reason was for DeGenerals to use it, but it's a ridiculous decision.

Edit: Not saying they used Unity, I can't recall which engine it's running on, but that a major game engine had that as a default location for the longest time, is astounding.

Yes, it's Unity.

But the saves should be done in files, easier to backup or transfer to an other computer (for example notebook).

Ehm, guys.... are you serious?

In 2020 you distributed a steam game with no saving/autosaving files but a registry reference?
So that means reinstalling my OS i lost my full tank museum, missions and incoming progress?

Sorry but i'm not your beta tester, even if this game wasn't much expensive, nor one of your developer team member: why the hell, in the middle of the game, i have to take care of striking tilde+some other command to create a save game file? Place a button that do/automate it...

I'm a final user and you're expected to create a solid game infrastructure with the goal to give me fun playing your creation.

OK this would explain why i lost my game, was knuckleheaded thing to do, who has saved data going into the registry, this is beyond perplexing. I had an issue with my OS due to one of microsoft's updates and had to reinstall OS. I had saved my users folder 1st thinking that should save all the saved game data and my steam games are all on a different hard drive so saving the users folder should have worked, but it didn't and now i understand. This should be fixed, the save should be in either the steam folder or the user folder not the registry, scratching my head at this point.

I have been spending a lot of time trying to figure out how to delete a bunch of auto saves that are taking up all my save slots. The game won't allow me to delete them in game and i can't locate them in the steam folder or the users folder, this is a complete mess.
