There was, last I checked into it, still no plans to fix the controller and joystick recognization software for STEAM AP , valve thinks it low priority I guess. Only been like FOREVER its been needed.
Keyboard/Mouse option to play pc games is the way the gaming professionals use.
Its been this way since the beginning of time and way before consoles were invented.
Any other way of controlling a game like this is ludicrous in my opinion.
Gamepads makes only sense if you use the two thumbsticks, which is on construction vehicles often the case because they often have two joysticks (excavator for example).
Mouse cursor change position supported by right stick.
Left Stick X - move horizontal;
Left Stick Y - move vertical;
Right Stick X - rotate horizontal;
Right Stick Y - rotate vertical;
Cross - selector (left mouse click);
Circle - cancel (escape);
Triangle - radial menu;
Square - jump (and selector for some UI / radial buttons);
Left Stick Button - sprint;
Right Stick Button - crouch;
L1 - highlight;
R1 - flashlight;
L2 - middle mouse click;
R2 - right mouse click.
Type again "controller" to back to default keyboard system.
1. Set default keybindings for TMS (Main Menu > Settings > Game > Show controls > Reset > Apply), exit game.
2. Connect controller to a PC.
3. Restart Steam, enable Big Picture mode (icon in top right corner of Steam window).
4. Select "Settings" (gear-shaped icon).
5. Select "Controller Settings".
6. List "Detected Controllers" should contains properly detected device names. For Xbox controller, enable option "Xbox Configuration Support" etc.
7. "Back" / "Back" / select "Library" / select "Tank Mechanic Simulator".
8. Select "Manage Game" then "Controller Configuration".
9. Select "Browse Configs".
10. Select "Templates" , then "Keyboard (WASD) and Mouse", then "Apply Configuration", then "Done".
11. Select "Your Game" , then "Play", then "Play Tank Mechanic Simulator".
Default basic configuration for PS4 controller:
Left stick - player / vehicle / tank movement;
Right stick - mouse cursor movement; player rotation;
R3 - mouse left click;
L2 - mouse right click;
Square - radial menu;
L3 - sprint;
Options - options / cancel;
Cross - jump;
Circle - toggle vehicle engine;
Despite the negative comments from users above who don't accept the more options for players the better for everyone.
In my case, I play on a big screen from a couch or bed, in fact currently I can't play on a desk even if I wanted to due to a back injury, and controller support is a must for me, as using KBM is very uncomfortable and unpractical from where I sit or lay down. There are dozens of first person games with crafting/building systems similar to this on consoles and on PC, with full controller support that work wonderfully. It's nothing that crazy or hard as some want to make believe.
EDIT: I've found the in game option for controller schemes I guess that's a more recent development. And it is something, but has a lot of room for improvement. Leaves a lot to be desired when compared with a game like house flipper, or Space Engineers. Very comparable functionalities, way better implemented on a controller.
I do appreciate when devs at least attempt some semblance of controller support when it was not an intended feature for the game so that there is some work around.
Main Menu - > Settings -> Game -> Show Controls -> Control Scheme.
Available controllers:
- Mouse and keyboard;
- PlayStation 4;
- Xbox One;
- Default (generic device);
- Steam Deck.
