Turok

Which is your favorite Turok game?
Out of all the Turok games, I've only played Evolution, Dinosaur Hunter, and 2008. I've never played Seeds of Evil, Oblivion, or Rage Wars. I haven't even played Escape From Lost Valley. so I'll only be talking about the three games I've played. I know Seeds of Evil and Oblivion are good because I've heard many fans talk about them. but what about you? what is your favorite out of all the Turok gamess?

For me, personally, my number one favorite is Evolution. yes, I know of all its problems. but let me explain why its my favorite.

First reason is that it was what introduced me to Turok. I had never heard of Turok before this game. I got it for my 10th birthday. now that I've played Dinosaur Hunter before and I can see why fans had problems with it. slower pace gameplay, smaller levels, glitches galore, but I had no idea about that stuff (except for the glitches) before playing so I didn't mind at all. I was just happy to be shooting dinosaurs and enemy soldiers with powerful weapons.

Second reason; the Slegs. out of all the enemies in Turok so far, the Slegs have stood out to me the most. reptilian men with armor and guns. yes, the other Turoks have reptile men too, but they were mostly just humanoid dinosaurs with weapons strapped onto them. the Slegs built war machines to destroy entire cities, they had massive fortresses, tech ahead of what most humans in the Lost Land had at the time, they wore armor with radios and ammo pouches that made them look experienced with modern warfare, attaching weapons to every dinosaur they can find and making them into living tanks, and their monks had access to ancient magic that the Slegs implemented into their tech. such as those massive spikes they used to teleport troops to the front lines. I have so many reasons why they still stand out to me amongst all other Turok villains. even on the Turok Forum website, just about everyone else I've seen also liked the Slegs. this is one enemy I wish we could have seen more from them.

Third reason; The music. I have the entire soundtrack on my playlist. I don't think there is one song I don't like. again, I have not played Seeds of Evil, Oblivion, or Rage Wars, so I don't know how good their music is, but Evolution's is still my most favorite so far. especially the main menu ost.

Fourth reason; Tarkeen was really cool in my opinion.

Fifth reason: The game clearly had more story to tell than what we actually got. much of the story was left to text in the loading screens of each level. I feel that if the devs were given more time, we would have gotten so much more.

These are the main reasons off the top of my head. there were others but I can't remember them.

The 2008 Turok is my least favorite so far. standard gameplay, ok characters, and a pretty meh story. but the number one thing I did like about it was how savage the dinosaurs were. covered in scars and open wounds, rotting teeth that'd give a dentist nightmares for weeks, and those soulless eyes. these animals were in constant conflict with others, barely given any time to heal their injuries before another fight. it was safer hugging a landmine than it was poking these creatures with a 50ft poll.

The concept art is still some of my favorite. these creatures look like they came from Silent Hill.

As for Turok: The Dinosaur Hunter, all I can really say is that I enjoy the gameplay. fast pace, lots of weapons, and tons of enemies to shoot.

Maybe Seeds of Evil, Oblivion, and Rage Wars will be my new favorites when I finally get around to playing them. but this is all just my opinion and nothing else.

First game.

2 is okay, don't recall if I actually played 3. Actively hated evolution. Played five minutes of the godawful reboot because it was blatantly not turok and just some godawful military shooter that happened to have dinosaurs hidden behind the motion blur.

2 by far, the first is great too but Turok 2 just can't be beaten lol
probably T2. T2 is superior in so many ways. However i do like most Turok and i also prefer Tal Set over joshua.

Played Dinosaur Hunter, Seeds of Evil and the 2008 reboot.

I'd say by far my best experience was with Dinosaur Hunter. It's just a succession of really killer maps (minus some low points midgame, mostly some sections of The Ruins and The Catacombs), with a nice, mixed feeling of being thrown in a huge open environment, but that is actually quite oppressive thx to the fog and dense vegetation. The N64 fog really helped the atmosphere, and I was glad to see the maps still mostly hold up today with most of the fog removed. Gameplay is really fast-paced and aggressive. The game doesn't have one BFG, it doesn't have two BFGs, it has three BFGs, and even regular explosive weapons are on steroids compared to other games. 10 yo me was having a meltdown, and 30+yo me still does (^:

I loved Turok 2 as a kid. I only have bad things to say about it after blowing the dust off my N64 a few years ago. It's slow, dark, has massive framerate issues, the damage localisation is wonky and makes early fights an absolute chore, platforming is atrocious thx to Joshua's snail-like pace, maps are monotonous mazes that go on for way too long, there's at least 3 or 4 weapons that are complete fluff and make the 1st game's Alien Weapon look useful, etc... I remember when Nightdive released DH and switched to SoE instead of focusing on the map editor for DH, I was like "Y U do dis to me Nightdive?"

Turok 2008 wasn't bad. It was generic late 2000s shooter executed well, with dinos. it would have deserved a wonkier weaponry, especially handguns to give dual-wielding some depth. Some enemies, like the Lurkers, were especially great to fight.
Still, it just didn't feel like a Turok game. No light burden, no purlins, no leapers? No quad anti-matter laser rocket machinegun? WTF is that horrible mohawk/buzzcut hybrid haircut?

Turok 1 was great, still love it.

But my favorite was, and still is Turok 2. It's a complex game for the N64, pushing a lot of limits. I loved the maps exploration and having to find specific powers to access zones you couldn't go to previously in some maps (I never disliked the 'back tracking', going back to previous maps, etc). Loved everything about it, but I'd say that the Soundtrack is the show-stealer of the game, overall.

I didn't like Turok 3 much back then, it was a single rental (compared to owning both previous games). I did make it pretty far but never bothered to finish. However, with this said, I loved one of the map in particular, it's been ages so I might be wrong. It was either the 2nd or probably the 3rd level. It's a return to the very first map of Dinosaur Hunter, but is overgrown, and taken over by 'bandits' and has guard towers and encampments. I really liked that touch from the devs there.

I'd say I actually preferred Evolution over Turok 3. I did finish Evolution on PS2, pretty solid game.

I never touched the Turok 2008 game. It has nothing to do with Turok. They tried to make it seem like it but it miserably failed. As a generic shooter it could have had any other name and it might have worked better. It's not because there's "Dinos" in your game that it suddenly means it's Turok. Dino Crisis never pretended to be Turok. Turok is about the Lost Land and there's an incredible variety of beasts and creatures (and aliens), not just Dinosaurs.

The 'problem' with the Turok franchise has always been coming from basically the cover art of the first game, because there's a Raptor on it - BOOM - it's a "FPS game with Dinos" automatically, it stayed for the rest of the franchise's active life span, people in general always considered it a "Dinos shooter", even though the biggest of irony is that you mostly fight against Humans, even in Dinosaur Hunter. There's entire sections of some of the maps where there's absolutely zero "Dino" to fight. Anyway, better stop there I could write a novel about this aspect of the franchise perception.

So yeah #1 is Turok 2 for me. I'd say Turok 1 as #2, and Evolution as #3.

Honorable mention to Turok 3 for some things but it's a 'miss' overall (still... I'd rather play Turok 3 again than play the 2008 game). If Nightdive ever remasters Turok 3 I'll give it another chance.

I've played Turok 1 and 2, and I prefer the latter since it's basically a straight upgrade in most regards, although I also like the first game and its more fast-paced gameplay and less maze-like levels.
PS: Happy 26th anniversary.

Evolution was my first experience with Turok, but Turok 2 I think is the best outta them all, with Turok 1 coming a close second.

never played 1 but it looks better 2 is trash
Evolution is one of my favorites, but I still have a soft spot for Turok 2 as well.

I explained why through here:
