2 is okay, don't recall if I actually played 3. Actively hated evolution. Played five minutes of the godawful reboot because it was blatantly not turok and just some godawful military shooter that happened to have dinosaurs hidden behind the motion blur.
sorry for necro
I'd say by far my best experience was with Dinosaur Hunter. It's just a succession of really killer maps (minus some low points midgame, mostly some sections of The Ruins and The Catacombs), with a nice, mixed feeling of being thrown in a huge open environment, but that is actually quite oppressive thx to the fog and dense vegetation. The N64 fog really helped the atmosphere, and I was glad to see the maps still mostly hold up today with most of the fog removed. Gameplay is really fast-paced and aggressive. The game doesn't have one BFG, it doesn't have two BFGs, it has three BFGs, and even regular explosive weapons are on steroids compared to other games. 10 yo me was having a meltdown, and 30+yo me still does (^:
I loved Turok 2 as a kid. I only have bad things to say about it after blowing the dust off my N64 a few years ago. It's slow, dark, has massive framerate issues, the damage localisation is wonky and makes early fights an absolute chore, platforming is atrocious thx to Joshua's snail-like pace, maps are monotonous mazes that go on for way too long, there's at least 3 or 4 weapons that are complete fluff and make the 1st game's Alien Weapon look useful, etc... I remember when Nightdive released DH and switched to SoE instead of focusing on the map editor for DH, I was like "Y U do dis to me Nightdive?"
Turok 2008 wasn't bad. It was generic late 2000s shooter executed well, with dinos. it would have deserved a wonkier weaponry, especially handguns to give dual-wielding some depth. Some enemies, like the Lurkers, were especially great to fight.
Still, it just didn't feel like a Turok game. No light burden, no purlins, no leapers? No quad anti-matter laser rocket machinegun? WTF is that horrible mohawk/buzzcut hybrid haircut?
But my favorite was, and still is Turok 2. It's a complex game for the N64, pushing a lot of limits. I loved the maps exploration and having to find specific powers to access zones you couldn't go to previously in some maps (I never disliked the 'back tracking', going back to previous maps, etc). Loved everything about it, but I'd say that the Soundtrack is the show-stealer of the game, overall.
I didn't like Turok 3 much back then, it was a single rental (compared to owning both previous games). I did make it pretty far but never bothered to finish. However, with this said, I loved one of the map in particular, it's been ages so I might be wrong. It was either the 2nd or probably the 3rd level. It's a return to the very first map of Dinosaur Hunter, but is overgrown, and taken over by 'bandits' and has guard towers and encampments. I really liked that touch from the devs there.
I'd say I actually preferred Evolution over Turok 3. I did finish Evolution on PS2, pretty solid game.
I never touched the Turok 2008 game. It has nothing to do with Turok. They tried to make it seem like it but it miserably failed. As a generic shooter it could have had any other name and it might have worked better. It's not because there's "Dinos" in your game that it suddenly means it's Turok. Dino Crisis never pretended to be Turok. Turok is about the Lost Land and there's an incredible variety of beasts and creatures (and aliens), not just Dinosaurs.
The 'problem' with the Turok franchise has always been coming from basically the cover art of the first game, because there's a Raptor on it - BOOM - it's a "FPS game with Dinos" automatically, it stayed for the rest of the franchise's active life span, people in general always considered it a "Dinos shooter", even though the biggest of irony is that you mostly fight against Humans, even in Dinosaur Hunter. There's entire sections of some of the maps where there's absolutely zero "Dino" to fight. Anyway, better stop there I could write a novel about this aspect of the franchise perception.
So yeah #1 is Turok 2 for me. I'd say Turok 1 as #2, and Evolution as #3.
Honorable mention to Turok 3 for some things but it's a 'miss' overall (still... I'd rather play Turok 3 again than play the 2008 game). If Nightdive ever remasters Turok 3 I'll give it another chance.
PS: Happy 26th anniversary.
