I bought this game along time ago (pretty much at release) on epic. Just the base game. I didn't get far into it before I stopped, it just didn't grab me. I came back a few times but had the same issue with the initial story, and eventually the fact I didn't have the 4th skill tree from the DLC (which has some really cool changes to how you play for a few of them etc).
I did like it enough to want to eventually play it and kept an eye on Epics sales to see if I could ever get the second season pass for $20 or less but it basically never went on sale, and it wasn't worth it for me to spend that much, so I kept putting it hold.
So when they had this sale the entire thing, the game and ALL the DLC was only $20. That adds a ton more than just the extra trees, boosts level cap to 72 (so you can make really cool builds with 2 capstones now) etc. I bought it and have been playing it all day yesterday.
Night and day how much fun it is already to me tbh, probably also a bit about RNG as I got a legendary pistol right out of the gate on Amara (who I was building towards melee till then lol, luckily just having gotten health regen and max health so far though).
So I don't recommend (for me at least) the base game but I DO recommend it with the dlcs. For 20 the entire pack is a great value and I don't mind owning the game twice. I do regret paying full price when it released though, but I am slowly learning my lesson and other then a very few games won't buy anymore on release in the future.
Now if you don't have Tiny Tina's wonderland and you are only going to get one game, get that one, because as much fun as I am having with BL3, and how worth it that game is, Wonderland is the freaking BOMB baby, and the first game in the series that I think competes with BL2 as far as sheer awesomeness.
My ranking is now Bl2 and TT competing for 1, BL1 (due to being new/first etc), BL3 and finally blah pre-sequel.
Skip the director's and designer's cut DLC, they are complete garbage.
The other content/mission DLCs are not too bad (Kriegs, Moxxis and GLT etc) are okayish and give you some early legendaries, but nothing gameplay or storywise you wouldn't get in the base game en masse. Some nice leveldesgins and dialog lines in Kriegs DLC would make it the best of the bunch. Not worth 15 bucks. If you could get all DLC content for less than 10 bucks, take it.
Current Ultimate Editions for 99 bucks or something is not worth it. Get the base game at the next sale event for 10-15 bucks and only go for any DLC if you find yourself playing it more than 40 hours or something.
The grind is still strong in BL3 and most people get bored mid campaign. And it still has all the same game design issues like BL1/2 had. Classes are not totally broken, like Salvadore in BL2 was - but the skill trees are everything but balanced.
The weapons in terms of Dmg Output on same level / same item level can vastely differ. Submachineguns are garbage. Sniper rifles underwhelming in terms of single target dmg (even the jacobs and sniper builds). Also: as always. Especially in the tight DLC missions where monsters spawn around and behind you every three steps. You will find yourself sniping away the occassional enemy sniper. But 99 % you will just blast through with automated guns and overpowered revolvers - as usual. Or just some legendary pistols that do more AOE damage than a rocket launcher. Makes me wonder why there are heavy weapons at all in the game. They are pretty useless as well due to AOE damage beeing available as mod for all weapons. And the limited ammo for hvy and snipers makes them twice as bad.
That's right, people, GEARBOX MADE ADDITIONAL SKILL TREES AS DLC.
