Lots of people are revisiting it with Helldivers 2 coming, and I am sure more will pick it up for the same reason... to play the first one

Those "issues" are not issues, they are design choices to promote teamwork and maintain a sense of difficulty in the game. Friendly Fire is a pretty significant risk when players are required to stick together and mouse users have to actually aim rather than 360 degree no-scope every bug that appears on the screen.
I mean it's not like they were being unreasonably cruel like requiring mouse users to drag & drop the little mag on the gun icon to reload. :)
Its just not worth the time. Which is sad, because its not the games fault.
Text chat shows above your character and there's voice commands.
You don't need to communicate where you're standing and shooting, you need to watch your line of fire and stay out of others.
I played with 3 randoms earlier today, random match on 12 difficulty (goes from 1 to 15 i think).
I think there were two or three deaths per mission at best and they were either because of enemy swarms or a random stratagem crushing a friendly.
Friendlies will call in a respawn becon at lightning speed too, i can't think of any other drop-in coop game where teammates are generally as cooperative as here.
No offense, but it really sounds like you're either making this up or you've had the most solid gold run of bad luck of all time.
I've played this for a combined total of ~500ish hours on PS4/Vita/PC, and there's probably only been about four or five people EVER that have been pointedly rude or mean-spirited.
Edit: I should also mention that I've never been kicked "for no reason" as so many people love to say happens to them. There's usually a reason, but being salty about getting kicked can really blunt one's observational abilities. For instance, 99% of the time I get kicked instantly after joining it's pretty obvious that Name, Name #2, and Name #3 are trying to play together via couch co-op without some level 30-something dropping on them and carrying the whole match with some rubber bands and paperclips.
Everytime i boot up this game i just look for any mp server and just go "hi" when i drop on, usually they'll respond with the same or the "Roger that!" voice command.
I have to double check to see if i'm even on the right game's hub when people say this game is unplayable with randoms because it's the only way i've ever played it and it is a blast.
I have an old vita laying somewhere in an attic closet and i never used the worthless thing as every game i had was underwhelming.
Might be worth dusting it off and picking up a copy of Helldivers if i can play on the same save as PC though!
Also does it run/play decently?
It's still worth playing if you like the idea of a top down, twin stick shooter. The sequel is a 3rd Person over-the-shoulder shooter
