HOI4 Keeps Crashing on Start up

So recently my boyfriend got me HOI4 for my Birthday. It would have been great and all if it didn't keep crashing. The problem is when I start it up the game keeps crashing. I start up the game and before it goes to the loading screen I get a white-screen and then it tells me that hoi4 has stopped working.

Here's the thing. It used to work. What happened was that I was interested in modding so I just fiddled around with the files. Now the game keeps crashing. Before It was working fine. I played a bit on the Modern day mod, war of the worlds mod, and even on Vanillia. Then things just started going to hell. I even uninstalled the game and re-installed it. The only file I fiddled with was the static moddifers. Does anyone know a way to fix this?

FWIW I was having this problem on every paradox game... Tried running in Windowed mode and suddenly I get from the launch screen to the game. (Changing the resolution had no impact, running windowed mode was the catch).

This worked for me too, it crashed on full screen without even showing anything. Running windowed made it work for me

Same issue since beginning of October. Suspect it's the Nvidia drivers. Windowed mode is the only way to start game now. Otherwise, plays normal.

Anyway, you could try a clean reinstall, i.e. all of the following and in that order:

0) unsubscribe from all mods
1) deinstall the game in Steam
2) exit Steam
3a) delete your personal HOI4 directory -- its path depends on the OS:
(Note: You might want to make a backup of the save games in there before doing that!)
- [Windows] Documents\Paradox Interactive\Hearts of Iron IV\ in your home directory[en.wikipedia.org]
- [Mac] /USER/Documents/Paradox Interactive/Hearts of Iron IV/
- [GNU/Linux] delete ~/.local/share/Paradox Interactive/Hearts of Iron IV/
3b) delete your HOI4 Steam directory -- its path depends on the OS:
- [Windows 64bit] C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\Steamapps\Common\Hearts of Iron IV\
- [Windows 32bit] C:\Program Files\Steam\Steamapps\Common\Hearts of Iron IV\ (Note that your OS isn't officially supported!)
- [Mac] ???
- [GNU/Linux] ~/.steam/steam/steamapps/common/Hearts of Iron IV/
3c) delete the directory where Steam stores the mods that were downloaded from the Steam Workshop -- its path depends on the OS:
- [Windows 64bit] C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\workshop\content\394360\
- [Windows 32bit] C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\workshop\content\394360\
- [Mac] ???
- [GNU/Linux] ~/.steam/steam/steamapps/workshop/content/394360
4) restart Steam
5) reinstall the game
6) verify the game

Note that there are possible reasons for the behaviour you are describing that aren't covered by these instruction. So if that doesn't work just report back. In that case tell us your OS and your hardware specs too.

edit#2: If you only only modified the game file without adding any new ones, simply verifying the game might be enough. It worked for me when I did that.

I followed all of this as well. I have over 600 hours logged into HOI 4 and now the game wont open without crashing immediately, regardless of if there are mods or not. All attempts so far have been futile.

Hey I had the same issue where when I tried to play the game but the startup would just whitescreen on me but this only happend when I tried to launch in fullscreen but when I launched the game in borderless fullscreen mode the game worked.

Same here!! I did a clean install of win 10 pro, and after bringing everything up to date, I downloaded Steam-HoI4 and now I can't start the game.. I tried a few fixed mentioned in other threads but nothing has helped..
This Sucks big time!! ..and I just invested in the DLC Man the Guns..

Did all of this and it's still not working

Mine works with some of the mods but when I try to start TNO or Kaiserredux It crashes,
I really want to play with these mods can someone help?

Is it just me, or did most of the problems occur after the new launcher was released?

Maybe it was in 2021 but for some users out there with the problem: Run the game in OpenGL in Windowed mode or in Bordeless fullscreen.
