HOI4 mods no longer appearing/ does not show up in launcher
I've been having a big problem the last few weeks. My newly downloaded mods are nowhere to be found. The older mods (mostly outdated) are still there. When the problem first appeared several mods had disappeared but i used the backups to restore them. No newly downloaded mods shows up though. I have tried a LOT of things so here comes a list of the things I remember:
  • Using backups found in Documents - Paradox Interactive - Hearts of Iron IV to get back mods
  • Manually removing all mods and clearing User Directory
  • Complete fresh install
  • Turned off/on cloud sync (account and game specific) many times before and after re-install
  • Searched, at the best of my ability, after where the mods are getting downloaded to ad why not to the mod folder
  • As I were in no beta programs i opted in to Steam client beta and opted out
  • Removing the mods folder, even the Paradox Interactive ( Documents ) and checking that when I open the game it creates new folders, wich it does, but it didn’t help
  • Between most of the steps I unsubscribed and resubscribed to the mods
As you may have noticed I have not copy-pasted any Steam workshop folders into the mods nor Paradox Interactive folder. Even though it kept coming up in my googling I read in a old thread that it’s not something you should do. I also didn’t want to use outdated instructions on doing it.

I’m in a dire situation here and could use some help. If there is one please direct me to a thread that has solutions that might help. I would be very grateful of any response and/or answers that can help me

As a sidenote while clicking around during a long session it didn’t cross my mind to back up the mods backups before a wipe resulting in me having 0 mods at this time :/

Yes, actually I did! I had Hoi4 downloaded on my secondary hard-drive but the mods were stored in documents on the C-drive. Apparently Hoi4 couldn't handle them being stored on diferent locations so I moved the game to the C-drive and things have worked since. I had to move some other games to make space but now I can atleast play with mods. Hope this works for you!

Much appreciated! For me it turned out that they were simply being stored in the steam workshop folder. I wasn't able to get it to stop downloading there, but you can just copy them to your HOI4 mods folder manually.

By default, the game puts the save files and screenshots into your Documents folder (see above). If you would prefer them to be kept in a different location, you can change this. Here is how:

Go to the location of the actual game files (where the executable is). Here, manually create a plain text file named userdir.txt. In this text file, put the path of where you would like the game to put save files and screenshots, e.g. D:\Games\HOI4User\. (You can delete the folder in My Documents and restart the game, it will create its files in the new location.)

IMPORTANT: Before you do this, backup your save games, screenshots, etc, so that nothing is lost!
