The current live version is 1.6.1 with the checksum 55d5
You need to have the same version AND the same checksum in order to play in the same multiplayer game. Keep in mind that most mods will change the checksum. Also note that DLC's have no impact on checksums.
You can first try the 'Clear user directory' button on the launcher and see if that helps.
If not then you will need to do a clean re-install. A clean re-install will fix all checksum issues but is a little more hassle:

Follow the instructions that start with: Procedure to solve point 1º
We tried the above sadly it did not resolve our issue
Why? Because if you do it properly then there is no trace left of the game after the uninstall part to mess with the new installation. So make sure you both followed the instruction exactly.
Me and a friend had a similar issue with a wrong checksum (mine was 55d5 and my friend had c9e6)
we tried many things from uninstalling the game, to deleting the files and folders in the C:\Users\UserName\Documents\Paradox Interactive\Hearts of Iron IV folder, none of it worked.
Only just now we managed to solve the issue by doing a number of things but chiefly my friend deleted the Steam Workshop folder found in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\workshop as well as uninstalling the game and manually deleting the files and folders in the C:\Users\UserName\Documents\Paradox Interactive\Hearts of Iron IV folder.
Despite the mods being inactive they were still influencing the game somehow and reinstalling the game alone didn't change the fact his checksum was different.
Give this a try, hope it helps.
