Microsoft Visual c++ runtime Library ERROR
Yay HoI4!

but it won't start... I keep getting the same very unspecific error, my graphic drivers are up to date so I don't know what is causing it, does anyone else have this problem and/or do you know how to fix it? :)

I would just like to say, I'm having the same runtime error, and still unable to find any solution. Nothing suggested in this thread helped.
If the message involves a DLL missing, try to copy the DLL to the correct path and registering such DLL manually. If more help needed please ask about how to do it. Short of time just now (and for the next hour).
The path to copy the DLL: C:/Windows/System32 and C:/Windows/SysWOW64

(Also can be copied to HoI4 folder, but not necessary)

Then registering manually the DLL, steps:

Open CMD as admin (write cmd on search and then right click 'run as admin')

Then on cmd window type:

%windir%\System32\regsvr32.exe %windir%\System32\nameofdll.dll

or

%windir%\SysWoW64\regsvr32.exe %windir%\SysWoW64\nameofdll.dll

Depending on system (32 or 64 bits)

PS:
The DLL must be the correct DLL to your system (win 7, 8, 10, ... and 32 or 64 bits), any DLL could be forced to be registered (but unexpected results that could vary would arise)

This is so weird. So I got a new laptop at work, one which should not have any issues running Paradox games. I installed the game at my office where I have a multiple monitor setup, my main monitor is a full size Asus. I played a little of CK2, EU4 adn HOI4 with no issues.

I come home tonight and every single game crashes at startup with the Runtime C++ error. Without going back to work to confirm this has to be some kind of video driver issue with the laptops screen? I tried starting in 600x400 but still crashes.

I guess I will know Monday at the office if the theory is correct but thinking it is. Not sure what the issue is or how to solve it.

More data? Operating System (32-64 Bits)? Total memory installed (4 GB prolly)? How many processes do you have running on background (software intended to speed up your system or similar)? I could try to help you, msg me.

Try this:
1.- Perform a clean boot. (booting only with Windows essential services, no other services, and without loading startup items). Search and run this: msconfig.exe and do the neccesary changes. Then restart and test the game. Of course, crashing or not, you must revert changes done in msconfig.exe to restore previous configuration.

If you don't know how to do it, then alternatively, try this:
2.- Restart your system, and while restarting press key F8 just after BIOS POST (Power On Self Test), F8 can be pressed repeteadly (by pressing repeteadly you could hear a beep due to a keyboard buffer overflow, is a beep from the computer's internal speaker, no problem). A DOS looking like screen will appear and a menu will bring to you some options. Select: 'Safe Mode with Networking' and let your system start. After the OS being loaded you can go to HoI4 through Steam, or better, try to browse to HoI4 location (...\steamapps\common\Hearts of Iron IV) and double click manually in the main .exe file (hoi4.exe) to execute the game. Try to play to check if the Runtime C++ error makes your game to crash again.

(This is just to start discarding and to identify a possible cause of your crashes)

PS:
Before trying the use of bcdedit.exe (bcdedit.exe /set increaseuserVA nnnn) command try to detect wich program interferes with your game and uninstall or update it (the better is search for documented possible errors related to such software and work around the way to avoid such errors or directly uninstalling it).

Running windows 7 with 64 bit. I have a intel i-7 6600 processor, 32 gb of ram. video card is just stock in teh laptop, like a intel 520 i think or something like that.

I tried the safeboot with networking. will try some of the others in the morning. thanks for the input. Just a lil lost here since it all worked at one point at my office and now does not.

The HOI is the only one that generates the C++ error, the other two CK2 and EU stop working instantly.

If you are running Windows 7 64 bit, don't use bcdedit command, asolutely not necessary.

No changes at all, nothing installed? Some automatic update could vary the system?

As you said: "Without going back to work to confirm this has to be some kind of video driver issue with the laptops screen? ". Try first your theory next monday.

But looks like you had a trouble related to your Windows kernel corruption or bug, due probably to some update or a specific program or a combination of programs. Don't discard some trouble related to software from your laptop vendor. Vendor: Dell? What would I try?

1.- Uninstall Visual C++ redistributable.
2.- Do you have installed Windows 7 64 Bits Service Pack 1? I'd like you answering to me no, because by installing it could help to solve your problem.

Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (KB976932)
Your file: windows6.1-KB976932-X64.exe
Site: https://www.microsoft.com/en-US/download/details.aspx?id=5842

3.- Re-install Visual C++ Redistributale.

If previous steps fails. Next step... more drastic:
4.- Do a Windows repair install (by doing this only reinstalls Windows files and leaves all other files alone). You can't do that because you lack of original Win 7 installation disc, isn't it? Just the vendor restoration system... That's a handicap, in such case of course do NOT a repair install.

PS:
- You got a not specific error, it's not easy to solve.
- The more information available the easier: Your laptop came with Win 7 64 pre-installed? Home Basic version?. How much time since last clean WIn 7 installation? Never done a clean installation and your laptop is as it was when you purchased it? Only a few months working with it? Vendor software installed? Antivirus/Antimalware? Other resident software?

Well was gone yesterday, back at work...they all run fine on my seperate work screen.

I have no clue why, its a much better internet connection but dont see how that would matter.

Crazy. Not sure what the fix is.

So more testing....with my work network cable plugged in I can run the game on the laptop, unplug the cable and run in offline mode then none of the games work.

At home I have internet, it sucks but I have 3mb download. I have no clue how my internet could be causing an issue?

Also cant you play these games in offline mode?

Right, you can play offline. Talking private if you wish...

I had this same problem and I figured out that it was BITDEFENDER "RANSOMWARE PROTECTION." So if you don't add it as a trusted application it/HOI4 won't work. It took 2 seconds to fix once I figured it out that it was my ANTI VIRUS. Uninstalling it will not do it!!!! You must add it to the RANSOMWARE PROTECTION TRUSTED APP OR SHUT OFF THE RANSOMWARE ALL TOGETHER. Have fun everyone..
