The minimum is one battalion of your heaviest tank added to your main infantry division, AA tanks are the optimal choice since you need less compared to regular tanks.

Light tank recon for armour is not really worth it unless you're playing a country like Germany since you have plenty of Panzer IIs in storage to use for this while still retaining your other tanks for attacking.

marines or mountaineers with their special forces spirit tree plus a tank.
medium flame tank, artillery, engineer, logistics support, armour recon.

Higher armor is better. Heavier tanks have higher armor. The AI will eventually upgrade their infantry guns/build AA or AT. This will greatly reduce the power of light and eventually medium tanks.

dont the low hardness make it suck? even if it dont pierce it still take damage right

So the space marines aren't as strong now. Piercing used to be all or nothing so as long as your infantry had more armour than the enemy had piercing then they would be unpierced. Now piercing is a gradient so the enemy having half as much pierce as your have armour will be 50% pierce

That said, the AI doesn't make much if any anti tank guns so they will only get the infantry pierce upgrade. If you can add a heavy tank with maxed out armour then your space marines will still get a pretty hefty bonus from that. Although that said, you might as well take that IC and just make 30w medium tanks since they will accomplish so much more than space marines. 10/0 infantry will suffice to hold the line provided you have air superiority, then use your m tanks to get encirclements

heavy tanks are incredibly inefficient. Just use light or medium aa with as much armor that you have researched. Keep bumping it up and swapping things to make it around 90%+ reliability.

More armour is the only thing that matters, and perhaps I should have phrased my earlier point better but the heavier the tank the more armour you can put on it, but mediums do just fine as well if you want things to be cheaper.

Very easy to answer: It depends. Every answer that is specific is wrong. Lets say you play Japan vs China. Why would you invest in heavy when u get for less cost the entire bonus of armor with a light tank? For Germany vs Russia u need bigger tanks, since they got anti tank and at least a mass of light tanks.

100% wrong :-) Why would u tech, build and lose in attration expensive heavy tanks in chinese mountains that on top of all that cost you that little supply that area offers? More armor than piercing offers no bonus. Always be flexible.

so what would you do

Alright, I found a video explaining how armour actually works and it's a lot worse than i thought as the most of the value is calculated based on the unit with the highest armour in the division with less based on the average of all units. It's as if you're encouraged to make space marines with the way it works or have one specialized tank type with only armour while the rest of your tanks are riveted junk heaps with 0 armour upgrades.

But for the sake of fun I'll still try to design my tanks with welded armour and what not.
