Importance of tech
Does it make much difference? I've been focusing on extra research slots and advancing tech as much as possible, but on the battlefield it doesn't seem to translate to any advantage no matter who I play as. I optimize unit width and strength to take advantage and assign air support but still get beaten by smaller less developed nations. Am I missing something?

Supply hubs/connections are also key to fighting on the front, but techs are pretty much essential, but some techs are more important than others

I usually don't put much thought into rails but I do keep watch of supply status. I forgot to mention I take terrain and rivers into account as well. Doctrines and everything in officer corps is optimized. Maybe I should delete all starting units instead of upgrading?
Tactics and numbers are the most important thing, researching and using better equipment isn't as good as it seems but you only do it to roleplay or against the AI since every strategy when executed well will defeat it.

To contrast, in multiplayer there are all sorts of min/maxing strategies all based on cost-effectiveness ranging from never using line artillery and never researching artillery 2 or above since the other two big guns are better choices since everyone is going to be using the cheapest possible basic medium tank with riveted armour only (likewise only basic plane frames are the only frames worth using.)

In-short: play how you want, if it it isn't working then you aren't doing a good job.

Line artillery gives a huge boost to soft attack, very useful. The m as in reason I spread my be research out is because it gets harder to avoid time penalties. But there are some I never touch like factory conversion as I rarely have a need to do this. Or forts as they don't provide as much protection as you'd think and lines are too fluid so they're either too far behind front lines or they're lost.

You seemed to miss the point of my post, and if line artillery is so good then you should be easily winning, yet you're not (also line artillery is good for attacking divisions in singleplayer but not good at defending).

But as I said before you're having trouble actually using them because you don't know what you're doing.

If you want some more specific advice then post a screenshot of a battle you're not winning and the location where it's taking place.
