Adding the FAL is really dumb
Alright so in retrospect ive been corrected and the FN FAL was around postwar, and I think there should be a new infantry tech for 1945/47 that allows for guns like the AK-47, FN FAL, EM-2 and whatever other equivalents we can think of.

Every time I see this weapon in a game, I can't help but think "Oh, it's the F'N FAL again..."

A vast majority of NATO countries ended up adopting it, earning it the name "the right arm of the free world" so yeah i'd say it's neat.

kind of bounds and leaps ahead of most WW2 guns

TBH the equipment names are just for flavour. All "Infantry Equipment III (1942)" have the same stats. As such the "FN FAL" will be the same as any other.

I do agree PDX should have chosen a different names. But immersion in HoI4 is now a completely lost cause.

We have to hope PDX will be more reasonable when it releases HoI 5 in 2050 or 2060 something

It doesn't have wheels so it's a firearm not a gun....at least according to my old instructors.

I spent a good few years with the old SLR (British version of FAL) as my personal weapon and loved it. Long, heavy, punchy recoil, but unlikely to let you down, capable at ranges beyond the 300m usually cited as max normal battle range and the bulk certainly had a positive psychological effect.

Yeah, I hate that idea too. Belgium just coming up with a mostly-metal assault rifle in 1942 is dumb. In general, this new DLC seems to have a lot of elements which are just fan fiction of the developers.

Yeah like how the sten and Thompson didn't replace the lee Enfield or garand.

What is more worrying is if they're planning to give FN MIO uber bonuses

So Belgium’s been updated heavily as has been revealed by the new development article. If you've gone through the entire thing you may have noticed the FN FAL is now researchable in game as their final infantry tech. While this is neat to most i find it particularly strange to do seeing as it was developer in the 1950s and it's development was a bit muddled by the US's call for a rifle using 7.62x51 NATO instead of the lighter experimental .280 round they originally wanted to use. Its odd that the Soviet Union then wouldn't be able to research the AK-47, or the U.S the M14 since they were both around. I think the Belgians could use a more 40's appropriate alternative (the FN 1949 for instance.)

This game's always been a bit strange about infantry tech, WW2 was a bit of a crazy time for small arms development and not every country had a true equivalent to something like the STG-44/MP43 so I understand to some extent why it might feel necessary to add the FN FAL, but at that point you'd have to add the AK-47 into the game too.

I think the FN FAL is a really inappropriate addition because the gun was developed in a post war environment with the hopes of having it be the NATO standard. Historically we're also ignoring The design history of Dieudonne Saive by just skipping to the FAL while ignoring the FN 1949 and other firearms development.

The fix I'd propose for this is maybe rethinking how Infantry tech is developed, Assault rifles/modern battle rifles should be a somewhat costly research project countries can undergo. I'd say maybe restrict this to majors and appropriate minors who could bring feasible offerings to the table, again the US with the M14, Russia with the AK, Germany with the STG and Belgium with the FAL. I'd replace the 1942 infantry tech with Battle Rifles for better player immersion (1949 for the Belgians and G43 for the Germans stuff like that.).

Currently just having the FAL with how it's planned is very goofy to me for reasons i've previously outlined and it ignores a lot of firearms development history.

You might want to educate yourself.

The FN Fal began mass production in 1953. So its actually accurate to see this gun available!

That saying the Ak47 should also be in the research tree as it was invented the same which was 1947!
