Enjoy!
It kind of reminds me of Crusader kings when you start as a baron and you grow your empire.
The first months before the war with japan is crucial. You should go for Shanxi, Xibel San Ma and Sinkiang in that order, timing your wars with the leat amount fo downtime.
There's a part in the north eastern corner where the river makes a right angle down. Put a supply hub there and hold against the japanese...building only rifles until you can hold the line. Then add Artillery and slowly push them back.
Then, as soon as you can, backstab the remaining warlords. I think I grabbed Korea before getting back to business with the civil war.
In 1942 I started building a massive army of medium tanks, I remember that there where some good bonuses. Not sure if it was a MIO or an advisor from a focus. I think you need to be friend with the soviets
Around 1944-45 you should be done with the war, have a good amount of infantry in the field and a good amount of tank divisions.
I didn't use planes as communist china, before defeating japanese, and the civil war was over when I started having a sizable air force.
From there, you're free to go wherever you want, well, maybe except to the US as your Navy is nonexistant. But the rest of Asia, Africa and Europe is beasically yours.
They don't have enough divisions to defend their whole border. So don't fight them but just walk around their troops and either encircle and kill them for the experience or rush to the victory points for fast annexation. Basic Infantry Divisions or even Cavalry for the speed boost are enough for that.
From this point you can take it slower and build up a little bit. Getting some industry going and updating your divisions to have more punch is a good start.
Investing in an air force won't be a good idea because Japan will outproduce you anyway so better invest in AA.
What you do next depends on you. You can join China to throw Japan out of China and later fight for the hegemony of China or you can backstab China while they fight Japan and reclaim some of your territories before you have to encounter Japan alone.
Once you have full control over mainland China you've become a major superpower comparable to the Soviet Union or the USA because you have a lot of ressources, almost endless manpower and many building slots to optimize your industry.
