I used to avoid jets because the fuel consumption, aluminium, chromium to build them was a pain keep up with with lots of countries.
Then I had a game where the AI had jets and I didnt. The difference in speed meant I could not keep up with the AI to engage them, especially for interception.

Speed is an important factor in the formulas.
If Jets avoided WWII AA in a realistic way then they would be "fine" for Tac/Strat bombers. The problem is that Static AA automatically shoots down a percentage of hostile planes in the zone.
