If you are trying to build two variants of the same type of vehicle "ie, a medium tank where one has a high velocity and one a regular cannon" it will cause problems. Best to stick to the variants.
You can't select a division template and specify that you want 2 (brigades?) of pz3 and 3 of pz4.
I find it infuriating as well.
There is a work around , it means if you want two types of medium tank one has to be an earlier chassis , eg. one improved tank chassis and one has to be designed from the new advanced chassis , that is the only way to select two different medium tanks for two different division templates , which is annoying and non historical
I have 4250 hours on hoi4 , I have not wanted to do this before either , but now I see the flaw , it needs to be able to be done
Yes it is something that needs fixing imo.
As I stated in another reply , the only work around is to make the two Mediums from different chassis types loosing some stats on the older version.
Another Paradox addition could be to have in the tank designer the option to load HE rounds and AT rounds , to change the stats of soft attack either in the template or even on the battle field with a button
2. Create "medium tank B" give it a turtle equipment tag.
3. You can only use one equipment tag in a division template. So you will need to duplicate the division with the rabbit tag and change it to a turtle tag.
You need a production line for each equipment type used.
You cannot convert A to B or B to A unless you decommission the design being converted.
You can indeed chose the specific model you want to be used, you just need to click on the tank type(light, medium, heavy, interwar, etc) and a list will disclose with all your created models and the ones you have captured from the enemy.
But from history, you may want a unit with 2 lots of howitzer, 1 of cannon etc. that you can't do.
