Tank Variants
I recently tried to make two medium tank variants , one as an infantry tank with a howitzer for better soft attack and one with a AT gun , you cant make two variants without it over righting your original tank , this makes zero sense , you should be able to have an infantry tank and a long barrelled tank for armour piecing.
Being forced to make it a tank destroyer is not right , it is not historical , there were multiple guns used on the same chassis.
I want to have one tank division template with a medium infantry tank and SPG , and one with medium tank with a cannon.
I am surprised to find this out , I hope it is sorted soon or these is a fix to it , you can not control what tank design goes into a template even if you make the tank the game tries to make outdated current again

You can select which tank you want for a division template, go to the equipment tab and select the tank you want.
If you go into the equipment tab you can toggle off the tanks you dislike in a template if you don't want to make specialized variants. Even so, you are far better off making 2 specialized designs and combining them in the template regardless as that's just going to be more optimal stats-wise due to the formulas used to calculate certain stats (particularly for piecing and armor).

You can already set a vehicle to be a tank destroyer or an artillery or self propelled AA with the drop down menu in the tank designer. Use that to make variants, then insert the variant into the division designer. If you use the type drop down correctly then it won't over-write anything.

If you are trying to build two variants of the same type of vehicle "ie, a medium tank where one has a high velocity and one a regular cannon" it will cause problems. Best to stick to the variants.

It's not possible to do this, just assign them to different roles like is intended or give up on something so unnecessary and pointless.
Make the modifications from the base chassis template. Or check for a save as duplicate option. Or recheck the modern equipment light on the first design.

You can make the two tanks, I think when the second is made the first becomes obsolete, so you can re-enable.
You can't select a division template and specify that you want 2 (brigades?) of pz3 and 3 of pz4.
I find it infuriating as well.

No that tab for equipment only enables you to chose , Interwar , basic , improved or advanced , it does not give any individual tank design , I have all DLC's , I am wanting to make a division with high soft attack Medium tanks with howitzers and SPG's , and a division with Medium tank with cannons for max breakthrough and anti tank and hard attack.
There is a work around , it means if you want two types of medium tank one has to be an earlier chassis , eg. one improved tank chassis and one has to be designed from the new advanced chassis , that is the only way to select two different medium tanks for two different division templates , which is annoying and non historical

Not unnecessary and pointless , and it is how things were done historically , the drop down changes all stats , the type of tank completely.
I have 4250 hours on hoi4 , I have not wanted to do this before either , but now I see the flaw , it needs to be able to be done

Yes that is correct , you can make two medium tank types from the same chassis , then automatically the first design even though not obsolete gets made obsolete , you can tick check box for out dated models and make the other tank non obsolete again , but you can not then make two separate tank templates and use which of the versions you want for a specific template , it just boxes together all chassis types as one , and under the equipment tab there is no choice for a specific design of tank , only chassis type.
Yes it is something that needs fixing imo.
As I stated in another reply , the only work around is to make the two Mediums from different chassis types loosing some stats on the older version.
Another Paradox addition could be to have in the tank designer the option to load HE rounds and AT rounds , to change the stats of soft attack either in the template or even on the battle field with a button

1. Create "medium tank A" give it a rabbit equipment tag.
2. Create "medium tank B" give it a turtle equipment tag.
3. You can only use one equipment tag in a division template. So you will need to duplicate the division with the rabbit tag and change it to a turtle tag.

You need a production line for each equipment type used.
You cannot convert A to B or B to A unless you decommission the design being converted.

You can indeed chose the specific model you want to be used, you just need to click on the tank type(light, medium, heavy, interwar, etc) and a list will disclose with all your created models and the ones you have captured from the enemy.

you can have two divs with different tanks, just have different types - rabbit on your howitzer turtle on your cannon, then one div template is rabbit one turtle.
But from history, you may want a unit with 2 lots of howitzer, 1 of cannon etc. that you can't do.
