What am I missing here? It has to be something obvious...
Im just playing as Italy, its June 1937. Crazy story right?
I went to research the 'Heavy MG' tech for my fighters, which is clearly in the 1936 time slot (if you look off to the left at the dates). In fact, the Survivability Studies is literally right next door to it in the same time slot, i already researched it with no problem.

Just to be sure I went into other techs and they all line up with the dates, if its ahead of 1937 it says ahead, anything older is fine..... except for heavy MG??

Is there some other prerequisite I need to get that tech without a "ahead of time" debuff? I tried googling this, all I get are results for when to decide if the cost of the penalty is worth the tech and stuff like that.

I'm pretty sure Heavy MG is not 1936, its 1939. If you hover over it it should say something like 1.53 years ahead of time in June '37

Yeah it is saying its ahead of time, but its definitely in the 1936 spot. I was thinking there was some kind of strange focus or other piece of tech I needed to get first or something weird. Okay then so I assume its just in wrong spot by mistake and it was overlooked. Ill do an update too, I have been away from HOI4 for quite a while. Thanks!

Its placed lower than the 1936, closer to 1940. The air research page jump from 1936 to 1940. The lower placed ones HMG and cannon are 1939.

It used to be a '36 slot, but was moved for balance reasons. As Frodo says, it is actually lower than the 36 slot, signifying that it is later than 36.

The tech tree UI lies with regards to the year of certain techs. You have found one instance of this.
