How to win as the USSR in historical game?

I haven't played vanilla hoi4 in forever, please help. I always start a game then I get cold feet and quit the game.

Not sure I understand the question if you're quitting before it all kicks off.

Use your manpower. Go for deep defence so the Germans can't exploit the inevitable breakthrough. Grind them down. They'll run out of manpower before you. Equipment too as long as you put your mil factories out of their reach.

well, you're literally turning tail when it kicks off

USSR has fat stacks of manpower so dont be afraid to take some casualties. as the guy above stated put huge effort into defence and completely decimate their numbers. they got less cannon fodder than you. much less.

You don't learn anything when you quit when things get tough, did the U.S.S.R just surrender when the Nazis advanced into their territory? because if this is the type of person you are then this game is not for you.

Da, the soviet motherland is truly great in size, and of many different people. Do not let such things scare you, but empower you! Every one of these men shares same dream of bringing proletariat liberty to entire world. Gird what you fear and wield it as strength, use all of many tools achieve victory. Trust in power of collectivist harmony, and you will witness great miracles that put silly water-from-the-wine tricks to shame.

But, much like tireless struggle of working class, to become number one super power you must start paving road as early as possible. Soviet working men are still trapped in farms and villages, they must work for state! Soviet manpower is great, what there is never enough of is things to put in their hands. There will never be enough factories and rifles, be ever building them.

The more guns you have, the more brave volunteers there will be to wield them. Much like factories, this is never enough. Also make sure there are still enough trains to keep them fed.

But also important is dealing with faithless traitors to communist vision. Deal with them as quickly as you can. Do not miss a single cowardly general who hides behind his badge, there will always be many more loyal comrades to take his place. The sooner the republic becomes free of capitalist sympathizers, the sooner you reap benefits of stability.

Soviet Russia needs strong man to lead them. At start there will be many voices. Everyone has different idea for how to prepare for great patriotic war, but not all things can be done at once. Think how long you need, but then decide what paths are most important. Make your policy, and then you must realize it! No distractions, be marching like engine of progress! Be focused. Be uncompromising. Be without fear or doubt. Be man of steel!

When war come, no matter how much it may seem you have failed, remain unyielding! Soviet man still fights, so let him fight! Fight with all the manpower you can possibly wield at once. Be unrelenting, they cannot stop you all!

A more interesting question would be how is it possible not to win with USSR?
You have everything, the great focus tree, the manpower, the resources, the production.

Reform the army, push out infantry equipment, artillery, trucks and support equiptment and swarm the world

How do you not know that you can put fall back lines behind every river and cause mass casualties by now?

I do know that, I just haven't put it into practice, at this point i think it's more laziness preventing me from playing vanilla.

1. Build AA/guns/trucks and reformat your army (you probably dont want to keep making the bad tanks you start with in production).
2. Get rid of Stalin's Paranoia.
3. Take an early land grab somewhere because why not?
4. You have a long time to build up (usually around the spring of 1941).
5. If you built the right things you will win.

Attack Turkey as soon as you get PP to get a CB. Around the time you finish with them, attack Japan (you should get some airborne divisions for that). Then, around the time Germany starts WWII, attack Swedent, get access to Norway ports and launch a naval invasion of UK with Japanese fleet. Then just sit in the Curzon Line, grinding down german aviation with half of Eurasian industry behind your back. As soon as you get total Air Supremacy, launch an all-out attack with CAS/Tactical Bombers. After that only USA and China that shouldn't be hard.

Starting in 1936 you have to go either revolution or go with Stalin and go down all the focuses to get past the purges. While this is going on you send volunteers to the Spanish Civil War. Rebuild the economy. Once Stalin's paranoia is gone you focus on research and building up the army. Choose the mo/rib path if you want more time to build up before Germany invades. The winter war with Finland is there too. I do find it's easier to fight the Germans on defense with forts. Also, don't neglect the air force.
