But, I am not sure why you would need one. You can pretty quickly build a naval base after you land if you can't secure one on your own. A level 1 naval base only costs 5000 so depending on tech and infrastructure level it might take a month to build. As long as you aren't somewhere very rural or very low infrastructure that should be quick enough i would think. You can attach supply transport planes to an army. If you sent 200 width worth of divisions with 200 supply planes I think you would easily last long enough to get a naval base built unless there are a lot of defenders.
Edit
Also, if you are trying to invade a rural/low infrastructure place it might actually be easier so long as you select a landing site that isn't near a naval base or supply hub. Your troops might have poor organization but so will theirs. I have seen stacks of 10 ai divisions on both sides of a front which both had no supply. They just sat there in line without attacking each other for months. The moment your naval base is up you can knock their out of supply troops senseless.
It's pretty niche and you would usally take a port by that time so it's not really needed.
On a note of usage, I like to play historically and use the game as a simulation. I try to follow the course of the war each time I solo play ... so it is more for use as the mulberries that were actually used on D-Day.
Yes it is due to the scale of the game itself. It is 52.5 km from Utah Beach to Cherbourg, in bocage country, Caen was much closer to the British/Canadian Beaches and the Brits planned to take Caen on D+1, but took 6 weeks and the docks there would have to be rebuilt to be usable. Cherbourg took until June 29th to be liberated but the deep water harbor facilities were destroyed such that it took months before significant supplies and reinforcements could use the harbor.
IMO, the game does not take into account the significant damage a defender would do to ports and the infrastructure of harbors.
Maybe they should add a feature similar to the scorched earth for the railway system, but for Ports and Airbases
Absolutely....whether it's Cherbourg, Tobruk or any other port the effects were enormous.
Just look at the efforts made to take Antwerp and secure the approaches due to the ongoing effects of damage to ports in France.
