-"I want to know what equipment I can convert to another."

If you have a plane with the same airframe and same base role then they can be converted. Say you're making the second plane as the UK.

You could start with a fighter and give it 2x machine guns and start making them. Then maybe you unlock the ability to put rockets on that fighter. You decide to change the design to add bomb locks so that it can be a Fighter and if there are no enemy planes then it can drop bombs.

What are the limits?
1. Keep the same primary weapon that defines the plane's role.
2. Plane conversions are only for the same frame. You can't convert your 1st plane into your second plane if they are not the same airframe.

Note: if you start the game making a base plane and research a new airframe quickly you might be confused by the production tab showing a "yellow up arrow". You are not upgrading those old Fighter I's into newer Fighter II's. The game is telling you however that if you have 1000 Fighter I's deployed that you will need to make 1000 Fighter II's to upgrade everything to the latest model.

Why does the primary weapon matter? You are not allowed to cake the primary weapon off the Fighter I and then change that to a bomb lock to cheaply convert those old fighters into CAS. You can add some CAS weapons and convert the old fighters into something new but you cannot change the primary role (which is determined by the primary weapon).

Nice, thank you. Now, how about tanks?

tanks are more free in conversions, same rules apply for basic chassis, no hull 1 to hull 2 in vanilla

but know that the difference in production cost between models being converted is doubled

so if a design has 10 IC and is converted to a design with 15, then it costs 10 IC to convert it over, saving 5 IC if that's something you're looking for

but say it was 10 IC to 20 IC, you'd not actually be saving any IC, as the cost to convert is the same as just making a new tank, and you can just use the old ones as a backlog instead

keep in mind when converting tanks, another thing to consider is also the resources, when converting tanks the resources needed are the cost of the new design minus the cost of the OLD design

so if the old model is just 1 steel, but the new design is 2 steel and 1 tungsten, then the conversion will need only 1 steel and 1 tungsten, if they are the same resource cost, then you need NO resources to convert over
