Why Can't You Delete Special Templates And Units?
Is this just Paradox being passive aggressive? "You will use the ♥♥♥♥♥♥ templates and units we designed and you will like it."

because they're usually historical units, the game isn't a 100% sandbox

It's barely a sandbox at all. Paradox keeps putting rails up all over the place. They put on any more the game might as well play itself.

Deleting templates because it caused issues for those units that could be added later - you can always hide the template.

Deleting units - sometimes it is just to tie up equipment in bad units where you only get the equipment later by event/focus (e.g. NKVD units in USSR). Othertimes, it is just Paradox being a pain.

One thing you can do with bad templates is change them so they either take no equipment or only take obsolete junk.
