About the Soviet civil war

Is it possible to somehow switch leaders and not go through the civil war? I did manage to assassinate Stalin with the help of NKVD, but then Beria took over and the war started anyway.

I think only with Bukharin path you can peacefully assassinate Stalin and avoid civil war.

Like I said, I played as the Right and assassinated Stalin, but despite that, Beria took over and the civil war broke out anyway.

Checked it. You can do a bloodless coup without civil war.
- you need to complete focuses in this order: Right Opposition, Need of policy changes, Infiltrate the NKVD, Organize the uprisings mini-tree till the end.
- don't spend pp points on anything, when Bukharin become available as advisor - take him,
- Complete decision about Yagoda before Stalin purges him (he needs to survive), sacrifice someone else during purge to keep paranoia relatively low.
- Complete Dissent in the party focus, you should have decision "Eliminate Stalin", after that Beria takes power and you complete Coup d'etat focus.
- Beria lose power and you got an event, where you can choose between Bukharin and Rykov.

Oh, okay. Thanks for the info. I definitely remember having someone else, not Yagoda, as NKVD chief, I also took almost all the focuses and clicked every paranoia-related decision to reduce it, I didn't research Coup D'etat, because it said that the civil war will break out. I will try this strategy when I play again.

It's super easy to win. Lend lease all the guns to Italy right before it starts and turn all your infantry to an AA division.
