Jokes aside, the guy above wrote it pretty well imo. Why would it be weird if you play with 12 years old Hoi4? Hoi4s audience is in this age group i guess lol. Nothing against young people, but this game lacks kind of the serious touch the other hoi parts had anyways, its more childish to say the least.
If you are a die hard strategy fan there are for sure a lot of better pieces out there to grab and play with a lot of historical things in more accurate and less sandbox-ish than hoi4.
To answer the question - no its not weird to play with 12 years hoi4, its more weird to ask this question in the forums.
I assume your friends play more like... hmm.. lets say.. Call of duty?
For strategy games you might want to take a look at Civilisation 6 and Endless Space 2.
I played Making History: The Great War to death before HOI4 but you will find the two games very similar.
Slitherine do loads of strategy games and sell a few Ageod games as well which are generally all far more complex than HOI4. I dont like many of those myself.
Battlefront do some quite good strategy games like Strategic Command: WW1 they are all addictive but quite expensive and not on Steam. They are around HOI4's level of complexity.
I think Civ 6 has some intersting additions but it will ne essentially the same game as always. I have gone off the Civ games myself havent enjoyed any much since Civ 2.
That is very good advice. I was lucky in that computer games didnt even come out until the early 80s when I was around 15 and they werent addictive. I enjoyed my childhood playing on bikes, going out with my mates, getting girlfriends, playing with other toys (Star Wars of course), painting, reading. model making etc.
Computer games are a heck of a lot more addictive now. I used to spend whole nights playing Falcon 4 when I was a student a few years back and even now I spend far too long on my computer rather than speaking to real people (and my family). You definitely have to control playing computer games or they will ruin your life.
Definitely set yourself a few days a week without any computer time at all. It forces you to do other things.
or any total war game of course
Company of heroes 2 is also a fun rts game and bit more fast paced than TW
Here in York we have several wargame, rpg and boardgame clubs. I play the Mongoose Traveller RPG game with my kids - its a scifi role playing game. Its a great form of social entertainment.
I would definitley look into that - pop down to your local wargame/hobby store and ask the owner if there is an ads noticeboard or look online for local clubs on places like RPG.net and Armchair General and here:

I can't agree with this ...
This game has nothing to do with history? Well, it's a game about world war two in which you can replay geopolitican such as strategical events ( at least some of them ). Yes. The game is not meant to be a history lesson, but it definitely has a lot do with history, in fact, it is ABOUT history. The history of the German empire and world war two.
I also can't agree with " History is telling us who we are an why " , yes it does, but this is not it's only keypoint, and just because the game does not talk abour your ancestors and how they have lived, doesn't mean it is not about history, it is..just about specific parts of it.
All in all, it is a game, as I've said in my first comment. But still, the game is ABOUT world war two a bit before and a bit after...to say it has nothing to do with history is simply wrong, in so many points.
Cheers mate. No offense, just trying to clear things up.
This incarnation of HOI is not as terrible as it is made out to be; it's new, unpolished and simple for the moment. This game has always been a slow burn to learn but now the slow burn and depth needs to wait for development and some solid mods to be able to scratch the itch for the veterans of the series.
For other PC strategy games don't be afraid to dig for some gems and check if there is a mod that makes a classic stay popular. Here's a few suggestions to look at.
-Victoria 2 if you want what enough people feel is the classic Paradox complexity experience.
-Total War Medieval 1 or 2, Rome 1.
-Dominions 4 (claims have been made that it's more complex than Paradox, also a strong community with many mods)
-Xcom enemy Unkown with Long war mod.
-Civ4 if you haven't played it. It's the reason many complain about Civ5 and good mods were made too.
For fun with friends: Try non-traditional board games.
