Australia a Playable Faction?
The Header says it all... are the Aussies playable or are they lumped under Great Britain as 'The Commonwealth'?

Thank you sir, would love to see some info on them but their wiki page is empty as of yet.

They are going to be my starter country

Yes, they are independent and playable. But they do start off as a part of Allies faction, so in case Britain is fighting someone, Australia has to join in as well.

Yeah, a decent starter to get a feel for the game

I believe they are part of The Commonwealth, and thus are locked into following British foreign policy, unless they break free.

time to make a facist Australia and take over Asia!

Australia - should be just kind f GB ally, as it was in HoI3, not even from start member of allies (same apply for Canada and New Zeland)

Not entirely valid. Whilst Australia certainly started the war fighting thanks to its deep ties to GB by the end of the war it was closer to the US.

This continues to today.
Australia is part of The Commonwealth but militarily is closest to the USA.

So for that reason I do used "kind of GB ally" and especially as question was about playability of the game, means AUS- GB relations in around 1936/39 not 1945 - 50, 60 ... 2016

As of 1942 most Historians would consider the focus of Australias military alliance to have changed with the ANZUS treaty the final product some 10 years later

Quick references (sorry at work and most of my resources are literature):

As WW2 is considered to have run from 1939-1945 this means that for ~ half the war the focus of Australia was on the US & Japanese War in the Pacific, not the European War (where NZ played a significant part)

As far as playability of the game is concerned... if Brazil is a separate playable nation then Australia certainly qualifies. Australia had 27k soldiers killed... Brazil had only 25k soldiers actually fight.

Also the Battle for Papua was a major turning part of the war and marked the limit of Japanese expansion.

You can play with any nation that existed during the game's timeframe. So yeah, you can play with Australia and Brazil. You can also play as a nation that didn't got involved in the war, like Honduras or Afghanistan.

@Chakigel above, thats not exactly true. It depends on what constitutes a nation. Syria is not a seperate nation in HOI, but it did have some autonomy from France at the time, as is the same of Australia, NZ, South Africa and Canada. The Statute of Westminster 1931 was not fully implemented in each of these countries at the time, so the British parliament did have some legal authority of the governments of these countries, but on the other hand, each did declare war seperately in the days following September 1st 1939 (invasion of Poland). There is some talk on the forums of whether certain regions should be free, allies, puppets or integrated into the major partner, but yes, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, South Africa and British Raj are seperate nations. Egypt is not though

Wibble the Obscure, looks like we do talk about 2 different cases. You do talk about real history, and situation after 1942 and so on, when I do talk pure about AUS / UK relation in the game in late 1930's. All what I want to say, looking in to previous HoI games AUS, CAN, NZ and so on been fully playable nations is you do desire to pick them nd play. Yes they do had own limitations but than most of nations exept majors do had them in one or other way.

No problem!

It will be fun to play them though and i do no doubt that there will be a ANZAC DLC at some stage (it IS Paradox after all!)
Private Snafu May 26, 2016 @ 8:45am
Would love to get some good attention of Paradox towards ANZAC and CAN, after all the war changed them massivly and had huge impact on they relation with the crown, exacly as you Wibble do pointed out in your previos posts.
