Poland has its own Political Tree making it more Interesting.
British Raj and Australia are also good but stuck under the control of the UK at the start.
Brazil.
Mexico.
Spain ( it is not one the main nations right? So it's one of the strongest minors ).
Scandinavian countries like Sweden,Norway,Finland.
Canada.
Australia...
A few more than five..but enough I guess.
http://www.hoi4wiki.com/Countries
Which are the top 5 strongest overall is debatable depending on how you measure strength.
1. Romania: Pretty easy to switch to facist, and since you have a surperior army than your neighbors you can easily crush hungary and yugoslavia before WWII breaks out, then you can join the axis and heavily effect the war.
2. Turkey: After turning facist or communist you can pretty easily conquer greece with a naval invasion, and you can secure resources from the middle east before WWII starts. Then you can join either the comintern or axis and have a decent effect on the war.
3. Greece: Essentially Turkey lite.
4. Yugoslavia: Romania lite.
5. Poland: Strong, but since their likely enemy is Germany that strength needs significant skill to back it up.
Good answer.
I am not too sure about what the OP means by " STRONG ".
An ingame nation can be strong in so many different ways, either by geographical-location, amount of factories, research slots, amount of starting troops......... etc .... etc ...... etc.
A proper definition of STRONG would be helpful I guess.
Nationalist China
Poland
Romania
Sweden
Finland
2.- China: War with Japan is a bit tough but it's really fun.
3.- Either Spain: Both are fun and can lead to some pretty exciting wars and alt history.
4.- Poland: Take over Germany, become fascist, fool everyone, Hitler was secretly working for Poland all along.
5.- Turkey: Kinda the same as Yugoslavia. Just lots of options, join Allies, Axis, whatever!
As PRC you can easilty take over the other three northern Chinese states without outside interference. Also, after completing the industrial focus tree, you get a bunch of factories, production bonus, and extra research slots. If you're lucky you might be able to take out Yunnan and Gaungxi before your war with Japan getting all those nice resources to help in your effort to take control of China in the name of the people
Also, you don't need to join in China's alliance, allowing you to sit back, relax, and watch Japan rape China until you have built yourself an army capable of crushing the evil imperialists
any of the two chinas. they have the most population in the game (i believe 2-3 times more than the soviets) and decent amount of resources. only downside is the war with japan taking some time because invading an island sucks especially when your eco isn't the best
canada/mexico will only say they are good because the US is on their borders. and if you can beat the US the gains are massive. 1/3 of the world's resources (or close enough to this because its insane) and 170ish factories. and due to being isolated from the rest of the world puts you in a good position to do whatever you want
netherlands. they start off with a lot of rubber and decent resources only problem is being very close to the war. through you could place forts in europe and focus on conquering asia first.
luxembourg because nobody expects them to conquer the world (sarcasm) =P
-for me being strong is all about your industrial power so i would go with a nation got high building slots and this approach gives us 2 different routes to take, do you want to deal with garmany, or uk or spanish civil war or even japan? if yes your answers are spain, poland, netherlands, british raj and china for second route, do you want to deal with other countries only when u want to deal with them ? then the answer is turkey and maybe brazil.
Exactly what I did! Though, I was less confident about my ability to take on Japan and joined the Comintern.
I was surprised how quick the PRC could bulk up without interference from anyone. Allies even sat back and watched as I Took Tibet & Nepal. I chose not to side with the Imperial Dogs and let them get beaten up by the Axis while the PLA and Soviet Armies 'liberated' Korea.
