To start with, youll need naval supremacy, so assign some ships along the path youll take. From Canada to Great Britain island is a long way, so maybe try it from a closer place, but it should still work. Air superiority can also be helpful but certainly not neccessary.
Then select some troops, click the naval invasion button at the bottom (is the first from left) and left click on your port for them to take off from, right click the landing province (best to be a port unless youll be able to take a port quickly, for supply reasons), then unselect the naval invasion button (which confirms it).
Then you just wait until your troops have prepared (more takes longer. minimum of 1 unit is 3 days), and theyve reserved the convoys required, then you can 'activate' the plan like in normal frontline attacking and theyll set off
* Try to have naval and air superiority over the sea area you wish to invade from.
* When setting up the order you can only depart from one province, but you can land on multiple provinces at the destination.
* try to land on or take a port ASAP or your troops will run out of supply real quick.
* try to launch from friendly territory somewhere close. It's just easier to coordinate.
* you can plan several smaller invasions rather than one big one and trigger them all to go off at the same time.
Tricks:
* Britain has a formidable and frightening fleet. If you manage to invade Gibraltar you can own the straight and trap a large part of their fleet in the Mediterranean sea. Plus, it might make good practice for your larger invasion. ;)
* you can have several invasion plans with no army assigned to them. I tend to have a few sitting around idle in case a beachhead gets established. If things are going well I'll assign a bunch of troops close to the port of origin to the order and they'll move in to reinforce when they get the chance.
Caveats:
Sometimes troops assigned to a naval invasion order get a yellow "!" saying they can't move to the destination. People often complain this is an AI bug but it usually isn't. Either they can't get fully supplied at the port of departure due to overcrowding, or they've been told to invade an area where you already have troops which are under supplied.
This is why trying to land on multiple provinces, quickly take a port, and have naval and air superiority are all important - you need to ensure that once they land they can keep fighting and all the former ensure there is enough supply available to hold the beachhead long enough to get logistics in order. Also to ensure your reinforcing naval invasions don't say "! we're not getting on a boat if we can't fight effectively when we get there." ;)
wow, thank you so much. How do I get naval and air superiority? I tried to get my navy to escort convoys but some areas in the ocean are red.
Send your air force and navy to those regions, and youll have superiority if you have a significant number more ships/planes than your enemy
Also, OP. For naval supremacy you need to send your navy to patrol other the regions you will go through.
Naval and air superiority are tricky unless you control territory close to where you want to dominate the skies and seas. So you want friendly ports and air bases close enough to your target to create missions there.
The red stripey sea areas are too far from the ports your fleets are based at for them to go out and successfully patrol. You need to base a fleet somewhere near the red areas to ensure that they can go on missions there. if you bring up a fleet in your navy view it will say which port it is based at and you can change its home base from there. Each fleet can cover up to three sea regions, so spread your fleet home bases out and you can run missions in many regions at once.
A large number of destroyers in your fleet (screen ships) will help with naval and air superiority and screen your bigger ships from harm. Keep subs in fleets of their own doing convoy escort or raiding as they will just slow bigger fleets down.
Same goes for air superiority - you need air bases close to the areas you wish to dominate. Fighter wings on (not surprisingly) air superiority missions are best at this. CAS planes help air superiority a bit, but also help your naval dominance. When you look at an air base you will see what wings are assigned missions there. If they are stripey yellow they are too far away from their area of operation to be completely effective. If red then they just don't have the range to get to the mission area.
For naval invasions you most need naval/air superiority in the sea region you are trying to invade from. You can get by with a reasonably safe journey to that destination, but need very good cover once you get there for your troops to land.
Some countries are super hard to invade.
The UK traditionally has a very powerful navy which is hard to dominate enough to land an invasion force. They just sit there smug on their island safe in the knowledge their capital ships can take out anything that comes their way. Naval bombers are helpful. Also the UK tends to spread out their navy using patrol missions. Search and destroy missions concentrate your fleets so help you pick off straggling UK ships and then run away before the rest of their fleet converges on the battle.
You'll face similar challenges dealing with Japan, but in their case it is a massively overpowered airforce.
If I were you, I'd try invading some of the British colonies such as those in Africa, island nations etc. They're softer targets, good practice, and will let you nibble away at their supply. Many of the smaller british colonies were originally invaded because they were rich sources of strategic resources, or presented some other tactical advantage. (hint hint) ;)
