Just placing it in there just in case Hitler wants to kill me. :P
1. Create a general/Field Marshal and put him on "Garrison" only in the effected provinces.
2. Create a general/Field Marshal and draw ONLY a "Fallbackline" in the effected provinces. The Fallbackline is actually not really a point to retreat to but a way to freely draw a line which should be defended. And if that army only has that fall-back-line command issued then they will immediately assign to that fall-back-line and defend it!
This way they won't push into enemy territory at that point but they will surely defend it at least!
as a best practice I always setup an additional general with a few divisions and mark all states behind my frontline to be garrisoned. (worst troops I have: cavalry, weak infantry divisions, MP divisions etc.) That way if a hole in your frontline happens and enemy units would normally push through the undefended land your additional garrison general will make sure they won't push into it that easily will defend it and give you enough time to react properly!
I am not at war and there are no enemies coming or anything.
Disclaimer - I may be doing it wrong - but front lines are limited to the border of a single country, so with the west you cannot draw a single front from Holland down to France (please tell me if you can - cuz I want that info!!).
Also if you draw more than one front line (forget to clean up) the AI can get confused. Not certain, but I think sometimes some units even keep old front lines in memory even after deletion. Again that may have been my fault, I need to repeat the situation to be certain. But I have a feeling that the whole front line and combat plan isn't fully fleshed out yet. No game breaker - really loving the game so far!!!
You can use the Fallback line command instead to cover an area freely without that 1 country restriction if you just want to have generally troops stationed there so you won't get suprise-invaded!
I would say the Fallback command is even better than the Garrison command for pure defense because on the Garrison command the General will spread troops around based on Resistance which is not your goal if you are setting up a coastal defense line @ Simulacra
You may be right, although in my experience using garrison on the coast with 50+ divisions was pretty effective in stopping most allied attempts, only later in the game, especially after I withdrew a number of divisions and my mobile reserve, was the enemy able to get a beach head.
Perhaps I should have included those details - sufficient coverage and mobile counter attack groups (10-20 divisions, heavy on panzer and motorized).
