Haven't tried that yet, actually sounds like a really good idea. Other than that I normally use Garrison Areas.
I played ♥♥♥ and conquerred china, oeast-russia, india and the near-east. A lot of shore-line to defend.
I startet with specialized coast-guard division ( normal infantry with additioinal Military police) and let them guard the coast. the run to the coastal provices and all fine. but when an invasion is coming, and the US tried it often in china, they keep sitting and wont do anything. They even stopping the player from fighting back a they relocate used divisions.
After that, i tried Fallbackline. I used 130 divisons to defend the chinese coast from Korea to siam. They went to the coastal locations and all fine. But they also idn't care of any enemys. oplus they used 90 of the 130 devision in northchina, having 5-8 Divisions on 1 location and leaving the southren coast nerly empty.....
the best defence was the US AI, cause they took 2-3 locations and waitet for me to recognize and fight them myself.....
I think, if your coast isnt that big, use concentrated Subs, thats how phillepines killed my invasioncorps..... -.-
