It was a failed attempt on July 20th, 1944, to kill Hitler with a bomb at his HQ in East Prussia, as well as use an emergency plan in place (Op. Valkyrie), to conduct a coup to over throw the Nazi Government and the SS, then make a peace deal with the Western Allies.
It failed, but came very close to succeeding, as Hitler was close to getting killed in the blast. It remains a matter of debate what would have happened if Hitler had been killed, but the SS putting down the coup and Himmler becoming leader was certainly a possibility.
