Can you not add less than 100 planes to a airport?
I dont know if im just done, but if I try to add planes to an airport, it moves 100 at a time. Well I dont want to have 100 at this airport. I want to have 50 at this airport, why cant I do that?

No, you can not do this anymore. Is mentioned in a DD that this helps the AI not too overcroud the airfields.

So instead of there being 1 large airwing at an airport, there will be a crap ton of smaller airwings

Not really.

Instead of having to run calculations to identify how many airwings were in the airport, how many planes each of those had individually and then sum them all up to compare to the maximum capacity of the airport, now the game has to run only two calculations:

How many wings the airport can support (up to 20), how many wings are there. For the player it was no biggy, for the AI it's a massive improvement.

i'm so glad they made the AI 5% more efficient at not overstacking airbases truly a big thing on my mind, if only they could've handled this in a better way that didn't involve stripping features

Except the AI will deploy wings that are underfilled, and will put them in air fields with more wings than allowed because of that. In actuality, nothing has been fixed and it might have been made a a little worse lol.

When we talk about 'better for the AI' we need to remember the AI is not some abstract entity, but the product of code written by previous devs. The game engine surely can count number of planes/wings at an airbase and make a decision based on that count, so bad/slow/poor AI just means historic code wasn't written efficiently and the devs are struggling to solve an issue in the air combat mechanics without a big code rewrite - but the project management team say that's not in the budget. So they make compromises like this to 'help'. It highlights the importance of good long-term planning and project management and writing code with flexibility and 'tails' for future expansion, otherwise you paint yourself into a corner.
