Part of the problem is that the game is constantly "upgrading" countries to Major Power status. I forget what the exact criteria is, but it's something like "The Top 7 Countries with >50 factories". So while you were busy invading the UK it's likely some other nation like British Raj crossed the 50-factory threshold and now you have to go invade them too. And while you are busy invading the Raj, Canada or Australia will then get bumped up in status, so the war STILL won't end. It's a really annoying issue that Paradox hasn't addressed yet, leading to seemingly endless wars as you play whack-a-mole against countries that realistically shouldn't be holding up the peace process.
