SERIOUSLY. ARE NAVIES 100% POINTLESS FOR DEFENCE!? I thought finally finishing my navy would end the madness of leaving a garrison on every port but I guess not...
I own britain. The only nation invading me is the USA. Because all the other nations have been destroyed. Also in the comment I put they sent troops right though a navy patrol AND then sent reinforcments though the same patrol.
Did you look at the screenshots? The navies are on patrol.
They both do the same thing actually. Patrol just has a wider formaton. Patrol is better for defending because your fleet covers a wider area. Its good for hunting subs and trying to catch smaller/faster fleets.
Search and destroy does the same thing but the formation is smaller. So when your ships encounter an enemy they can all go into the battle at around the same time. Its better for attacking an area where you know the enemy has a navel presence to prevent your ships from getting picked off before your main forces reach the battle.
They both have the same function, the ships search an area looking for things they can fight and win. If you want to use patrol for recon only you have to tell them to cease fire.

Why does this keep getting spread around? Nothing in the tooltip comes close to stating this. The wiki doesn't. Common sense doesn't. I am legit curious where this information comes from.
To the OP, I've never had a naval invasion launch against a coast I've had naval control over. However, I have had parts of my fleets get caught up in battle, stopping their patrol, which was just long enough for the AI to launch an invasion they had planned for a year.
Have they actually landed forces on a coast? Or are you catching them moving divisions from one friendly port to another?
The port was mine. They kept landing troops there (because once the AI invades a port. They will keep invading it OVER. AND OVER. AND OVER AGAIN! I parked 3 navies there on patrol in frustation. Nothing. It wasn't until I build a level 10 coastal fort and shoved a permanant garrison on it that they finally stopped.
I've taken a little break (waiting on a few more BlackIce updates) but I'll see if maybe I can tease the AI in to doing the same. I'm almost willing to bet they are catching your fleets in combat and launching the invasion in that small window... I really can't say I've seen quite what you are describing.
But I see you have dealt with it. I've never put more than one division in every port, and have never gone higher than a level one fort to defend. Sadly the AI can't really do much against that.
1. THis got bumped.
2. You need need navel control to even PLAN a navel invasions, and I didnt have doomstacks. I alawys have one fleet, and than three patrols (3-4 destroyers in each patrol. TO catch subs and convoys.) But the game won't even let you do a navel invasion if you don't have ships in the area. You get the "We wouldnt do dare a invasion here" message.
