I was just getting the hang of it in multiplayer when I stopped playing. Like I finally understood how to play us USSR, manage econ/macro and how to build quality division templates. But all I played was multiplayer, and I played Romania mostly because it was a good middle ground to participate and have an impact but not as much pressure as a major.
I reckon I would have a hard time jumping back into the game now. Probably need at least 50 hours and then a few long multi games. I have 400 hours now.
Things you can do are setup autohotkeys and other tweaks to controls to speed yourself up in various ways. (I configured WSAD keys to toggle on and off so I could scroll the map and click loads of stuff at the same time. e.g. hundreds of divisions advancing in realtime on soviet front, hold the S key, move from north to south and launch/micro!). There are mods that probably help with this too. I used to do a bit of practice with my build orders and controlling outside of MP games.
Also just hang out with the experts online. I hung out a bit with Sterrius who wrote an awesome breakdown of airwarfare in the early days. He taught me all about good division template stacking, especially tanks. Although I forget most of it. I don't know if he is still around but there are some very helpful and analytical guys out there who have done all the number crunching.
Best of all and contrary to the first post, doing the same strats over and over (but refining them) in multiplayer, will help you iterate into an understanding of what works and what doesn't. First you'll need to get to grips with the basic early builds though before experimenting. People will shout at you enough that you'll pick them up ;)
In the end I found that I was a game winning force as Romania as I played it so many times and I was central to the Europe war. A large part of that was how to manage diplomacy and knowing how other countries around me were likely to behave given X or Y factors. Not sure if they have debuffed Romania since then.
To have fun in multiplayer just pick some mid range minors that you like and play them over and over again. That way you have less pressure, less management, but also some fun as you do have an impact still. Ignore people whining just do your thing
