When i have researched med tanks (as Germany) should i switch my light tank production to med tank production or have a seperate production line for med tanks.

Thx

depends if your in war, stockpile of light tanks, how many divs you have deployed using light tanks, etc

edit: in the division template you need to add med tanks

I have 12 light tank divisions (1938). Total of 1152 light tanks.
If you have enough of a stockpile you can switch production completly and when you have enough stockpiled, start introducing the med tanks, one div at a time to the template. If you dont have such a huge supply, just reduce number of factories producing light tanks (keeping some just so you dont end up with 0) and start a new production line of med tanks with the factories you took out from light tank production

If you're Germany you may wish to continue to build & research light tank models, since you may be shy enough Tungsten to build as many Medium Tanks as you would prefer.

My last couple of Germany games, I've continued with Leopards (steel), Panthers (tungsten) and modern tanks (chromium) since that allows for producing/converting more armoured divisions.

As you get Army XP you can upgrade the models so that even the tier 3 light tanks aren't *too* bad....

EDIT: Plus, they're quick.

No keep building light tanks. You have to wait for you to get good efficiency with a good number of factories.

You can also convert those light tanks into SPG later to help the meds against infantry.

I don't know why you're producing light tanks in the first place
Reason why i usualy prefer light tanks , atleast till way later in the war is they are incredibly quick and can exploit and encircle enemy units really fast

so what you will lose more of them if that exploitaion will save you lots menpower and loses of everything

Same as sherman helped win the war becouse they had a lot of them and it was fast

Lighter tanks are cheaper also and you can make more of them

The fundamental problem with that is that you don't need a lot of tank divisions, you need a few good ones.
As germany, i aim for at least 4 before ww2

I usually build a lot of light tanks (LARM) and increase the size of the panzer division to 20 width. When you add medium tanks (MARM) to the basic panzer divisions (already trained and regular status) they gain a lot of extra armour and piercing which means they easily beat the light tank divisions and brigades the AI uses. They do lose a bit of speed but that is not so useful against France or Soviets as the increased power and protection

There is no need to have pure mediums in early armoured divisions, the mixture of lights and mediums is almost as good in terms of the important factors for an armoured division,

which are : soft attack, hard attack, breakthough, defence which are nearly the same,
armour (typically 8 for LARM and 27 for MARM/LARM and 36 for pure MARM). This means LARM can be pierced by support AA, and by enemy LARM but the mixed MARM/LARM can only be pierced by enemy MARM and AT guns which are very rare early in the game.
piercing with the mixed MARM/LARM is 37 which means it can pierce a pure MARM even if it is also pierced itself. And it is easy to add 1 light or medium Tank Destroyer with increased piercing to the template.

Well because it's the tank type you start the game with

i just stop the production of light tanks. i usually have a stockpile of a couple thousand by then so I can afford to lose some light tanks in battle while building medium tank production

well i usually put 30 or so factories on light tanks, and I only use them to encircle and rush to VP's, so I don't lose many during wars. i also make sure I have enough oil for all of them, because no oil kills the production for them.
