a good template for mass assault
whats the best division template for mass assault? i tried to spam all infantry but that didnt seem like a good option

well to be honest, best strat that suprise me how good is - spam 1 space divisions. its really good as you can place massive amount of divisions (1000+) in one way german will push you till they will get to a bad terrain and i dont really belive somebody are possible to push you then. its really boring strat cause both lines will stuck and wont be able to push you cannot push at all. but once german will be tired enough you can push them back (history accury) but that good just teoreticaly as you will be unbreakable but you will need to make more and more divisions. your only win condition there is have a lots of guns and manpower be ready to go even for scrap the barrel later and also be ready to extreme lags with thousands of losts :D but if you want something that not absolute joke and wanna play mass assault - you want to play on manpower as assault give you that mean you dont really wanna use artilery as they reaaaaly expensive idealy make 10 width divisions with shovel, but again you wont push they wont push. you stil can make 10 width with shovel stop german and then win on production. but count with that you need to have +- historical scenario otherwise german wont have another enemies usa britain etc and you wont be able to play on time.

If this is for USSR, I go with 10 Inf, Art and AA plus Engineering, Cavalry Recon, Signals and other supports depending upon whim (Artillery, Hospital, Maintenance, AA, Logistics all have their merits). It is a solid defensive division and can push at about 4:1 odds against Germany.

Thanks for the advice, I'll try it out. But what about Italy or some random nation? What would be the best choice for such?

generally you want to go 20 or 40 wide so what mk11 said sounds good for 20 wide and double it or so maybe do 2 ART 1 AA 1 AT instead or really whatever you need for who you are going against for 40 wide. Main thing is keep it 20 or 40 width with support and actually be able to fill all your needs. If you can produce it ofc more artillery or rocket artillery is better soft attack than infantry, if you really have good industry though might be better off building tanks.

why do you wanna play mass assault in first place - its really bad today you want that only if you gonna to spam with lots of manpower to low military output. that only fit for china and ussr nobody else. maybe romania, turkey, british raj

oh alright then, whats the best choice if i want to go offensive then? i tried support firepower but it was uneffective against most nations (i was italy against france, had 30 artillery divisions in the alps)

Mobile Warfare or Superior Firepower are generally the best doctrines, templates don't change too much between the two. Sounds like your problem in the Alps was more an issue of templates and terrain, not the doctrine. For Superior Firepower to be the most effective, get go for integrated support companies, the boosts are far better than dispersed support unless you utilize artillery in unhealthy amounts for your divisions. Search the forums for good templates, most of the Infantry debate is between ten Infantry battalions or seven Infantry battalions and two artillery battalions. Both are viable, but have their pros and cons.

Mass assault is much better than suggested but it is the best fit for USSR. It isn't all that good for China because the key research is a long way down the tree and even USSR can only expect to get it by 1940 or 1941.

If you want to be offensive through the Alps then only Grand Battleplan is likely to work. This because you need those large planning bonuses so you can grind forward one mountainous area at a time. Mobile warfare is best if you can afford tanks and use them in the open but not good if you are trying to fight through mountains or are mostly infantry and artillery.

If you cant afford tanks then in many cases you are best using two templates: 10 infantry for defensive purposes and a few 7inf/2art or 14inf/4art for offensive use.

If you're on the lower difficulties it doesn't really matter the enemy AI is so mediocre it doesn't really matter as you'll probably have enough production to make tanks and air as well.

At the higher levels your infantry exists to hold the line, so just infantry with engineer support is the basic unit. The other stuff like Artillery is something of a luxury. The main power in an army comes from specific Armoured forces doing break throughs, over-runs and encirclements to break the enemy line.

Mass assault is a good way to get rid of manpower. I tend to build 1-2 endgame tank divisions for steamrolling across enemy front lines and endgame infantry divisions with heavy/modern tanks for defence.
