Even when you untick the 'historical ai focuses' tickbox the ai rarely takes their alt history paths.

If you want the ai to actually go ahistorical go into the gamerules on the setup screen and set all ai nations to 'random'.

Even with that, they go fascist.

The AI will always choose to go fascist with historical turned on. It will never oppose Hitler.

That's because you could create very specific scenarios where some difficult achievements would become very easy.

I have seen Germany oppose Hitler on non historical with achievements on but it is very rare, like 1/10. Same with Japan, they will stay fascist 9/10.

Just setting them to 'random' is anything but specific, hell it's less specific than 'default'. Setting random shouldn't disable achievements, then again neither should anything else because who cares how someone else plays their single player experience as it doesn't affect anyone else.

In my present game (with Manchukuo), Hitler got assassinated by communists and the country became democratic, just after them invading Poland. And because Japan has been occupied by the war between us, the USA never got to war. It's only my second game, and there's a lot of things like that (Finland resisting USSR, Bulgaria teaming up with Japan, Brittain and Netherlands invading Italia...) !

But it doesn't affect your SP game beyond the setup you created, it just disables achievements.

apart from germany austria-hungary attempts to happen a lot

Opposing Hitler triggers an internal civil war, which the AI is not going to want to do because it's highly disadvantageous. For contrast, my experience has been that Britain goes fascist something like every other game if I don't tell them to stick to historical focuses.

I think the default German AI is also set up to avoid changing ideologies, the same way the default French AI is set up to be very defensive.
