And you're right, the game is really terribly optimized for what it is. Other Paradox games run as smooth as butter yet HOIV is very intensive.
What am I doing wrong?
Running Windows?
Old Nvidia drivers?
Too many apps/browser windows in the background?
I have similar hardware specs to your system. i7-4770S @ 3.1GHz, 16GB RAM, GTX 650 Ti 2GB. But I'm also running from a 256GB Samsung SSD....and I'm on 64-bit Lubuntu.
I can run HOI4 with a bunch of Chromium tabs in the background with no problem. I also have a lot of graphical settings turned down, and I play with NATO counters.
Sorry to hear you're game is not working properly.. On the other hand my game works flawlessly with everything maxed out. I am playing on an old I7 950 with 2 GeForce 470 cards that I built myself, and I have everything over clocked. I have an excellent ISP which is very important.
In my experience, a lot of times ( I work in IT) I find that the problems usually originate from or on the user's side. A lot of folks quickly blame the developers that they're game or whatever isn't working or there servers stink etc.Than I have a look and I see that its there PC or ISP or a combinatrion of both that was the main problem. Not saying you are or anything like that.
I suggest you try everything you can on you're end, even reinstalling the game itself. Make sure all is upto date and TURN OFF some of the PC resources that are not needed when playing games.
Nvidia is upto date and I set the highest priority to hoi4.exe in task manager. I closed everything else and also tried to turn down the settings as low as possible, still laggy.
It might be a problem of my computer as I found out that total war rome 2 is also running with about 15-20fps... any other tips?
If you're Anti Virus has a game option turn it on. That stops the AntiVirus from updating durring gaming. Make sure you're OS isn't trying to update somthing every other minute, as it tries to comunicate with Microsoft servers every other secons as I said. Did you try and reinstall you're game and even reinstall Steam? Just save youre game before doing that.. Clean out you're Internet Cache using maybe CCleaner.. Run a speed test on the internet using Speedtest software which is free online nothing to install..
Do you use Geforce Nvidea Graphic cards? If you do do you use the Nvidea Geforce Experience software that comes with it? Also there is a Nvidea Control panel that has nothing to do with Geforce Experience that you can do some twaeking on this exact game..
When I did the speedtest, it says my processor and boot are way below expectations. I reinstalled Steam, changed to 4 cores with msconfig(what I actually did before but it seems it didnt saved) and run CCleaner and Antimalware.
I'm gonna install hoi and try again.
any ideas how to speed up the processor?
Sorry, I told you some of the usual maintenance procedures that you outta do on a regular basis but it could be a host of things. I don't know how old you're Pc is and what type of hardware you have etc I'm not here to do that. I suggest looking at you're Pc make and see if you can call Tech support there, also look at the Processor make and google there forums and ask for help there.
Good luck to you..
