Once (if) the colonies are free, the african countries are in a really bad state.
In the Base game, Africa is pretty much "Resource territory" for the super powers.
Rarely...if its a power fight between free countries of africa...its a nightmare. because they have little to no building slots or help. so the unfortunate thing is...if your playing as an african country...You are simply gonna have to plow through the rest of the african countries just to get stronger. as africa itself is not a strong place. or unified for that matter.
If you want an honest game, you will have to accept that your nation is small and without population, industry or resources, you are basically stuck as a support role and will have to rely on your allies.
There should be a decolonize option in the game settings when you are picking a country to play as. You will need to not play in Ironman Mode so that you may be able to switch to another country.
