they are earned when in combat, depending on the circumstances of each individual combat going on

I've had my generals fought for many ingame years and you're telling me they received zero exp..?

no, thats not what I'm telling you. ingame you can hover your mouse over their skill level on the combat screen. it will show you their %progress to the next level and towards traits

Well generals still earn traits in combat without WtT , Field marshalls however CANT earn any field marshall traits anymore... which is pretty insulting to be honest ... "oh we are going to hamstring you by ripping features out of the maingame, and you gotta pay us to get them back!"

Paradox is really just completely evil, i kinda regret ever having given them money for this game. It has just turned into a worse and worse purchase over time , with every dlc that comes out. While also screwing over mods with reckless abandon just to bring out more greedy dlc.

Why does a general who is standing still and assigned defence have his army size triple to 72 division, then as soon as he moves, is capped back to 24? Is it a 'home nation defence' buff, or general defence, or something else?

Its a garrison buff, to make setting garrisons with one army on its own better.
