people missunderstand what kind of treaties japan had with the axis, and therefore belive japan was an axis member. but japan never really was a member of the axis in ww2, an therefore shouldt be a part of axis in the game either.
there are 5 important pacts that was made during 30s and 40s that is worth mentioning;
1 - The Anti-Comintern Pact was an anti-Communist pact concluded between Germany and Japan (later to be joined by other, mainly fascist, governments) on November 25, 1936.
2 - Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact was signed between the Soviet Union and Germany, in August 1939. With this pact, Germany broke the terms of the Anti-Comintern Pact.
3 - The Tripartite Pact, also known as the Berlin Pact, was an agreement between Germany, Italy and Japan signed in Berlin on 27 September 1940. this pact was directed towards usa, and was an attemt to scare usa from entering the war on the allies side.
4 - The Pact of Steel, was a military and political alliance between the Kingdom of Italy and Nazi Germany. The pact was initially drafted as a tripartite military alliance between Japan, Italy and Germany. While Japan wanted the focus of the pact to be aimed at the Soviet Union, Italy and Germany wanted it aimed at the British Empire and France. Due to this disagreement, the pact was signed without Japan and became an agreement between Fascist Italy and Nazi Germany, signed on 22 May 1939.
this disagreement also meant that japan didnt join the axis, since they didnt share the same enemies.
5 - The Soviet–Japanese Neutrality Pact, also known as the Japanese–Soviet Non-aggression Pact, was a pact between the Soviet Union and Japan signed on April 13, 1941. The pact was signed to ensure the neutrality between the Soviet Union and Japan during World War II, in which both countries participated.
with the tripartite pact, germany and italy had promised they would declare war on usa, when japan did. at the same time, japan then declared war on uk and the other allies. up to this point, japan and germany/italy didnt have any cooperation between each other. in fact, germany had advisors and military equipment sent to china to help china in the war AGAINST japan.
Note;
Historically, Japan did create greater east asian co-prosperity sphere. Its intention was to create a self-sufficient bloc of asian nations led by the japanese, that was free of western powers.
Furthermore, they can still be apart of the Axis IF they go another route, like a democratic civil war and you garuntee the Facists.
