Form the European Union? Is this a joke?
The update brought the ability to gain cores in basically the 6 founding countries of the European Economic Community (Belgium France Germany Italy Luxembourg Netherlands) if you control them at some point of the war, and the resulting country would be named "European Union".

... That's the least realistic and likely alternative history ever. Not only the EEC was a rather successful attempt to break the endless cycle of wars in Europe through economic cooperation, not war, all attempts to create a somewhat common European army was consistently blocked even to this day.
How is the option to create some kind of superstate even remotely relevant to a WW2 setting and the European continent? How could this even work in any alternate reality, said countries instantly becoming brothers and part of the same unified country, while the EU doesn't even qualify as confederation?

Why is this even an option with the current EU flag and name? I don't mind forming Empires for ♥♥♥♥ and giggles, but since the European Union name didn't exist before 1992 I don't even understand what you devs were thinking about. This is more sci-fi / current populist propaganda than anything remotely historically plausible.

That feels politically motivated and really stupidly weird, can you explain?

At the time, there were quite a few people calling for the formation of a European superstate (Including people such as Oswald Mosley). It is not really that implausible.

I'm looking forward to next years refugee crisis expansion.

Definitely more plausible than lets say the Byzantine or Rome popping up and getting cores on half the Europe :steamhappy:
EDIT: Don't get me wrong, I don't mind any of them being formable in the game.

In an age of hyper-nationalism I can totally see people living in a super-state going "WE WUZ BORN IN THE PURPLE ROMANS N' ♥♥♥♥♥"

I agree, but why call it with the name of the EU and its flag, while both didn't exist at the time and while they're not even close to what it would be ingame?

Call it whatever, United States of Europe, European Empire or else. But "European Union", with the actual flag (adopted by the EU in 1986...) echoes to current political propaganda and conspiracy theories, and as a wise thinker once said:

After WW-2 the Vatican adopted HITLER's wet dream for Europe. They may not have coined the term European Union at the time, but they were working on the project from the start.

See what I mean ? :D

Also, Kennedy was assassinated by true American patriots because he was in fact the Vatican's puppet

The dream of a unified europe is 3k years old.
People have tried time and time again through warfare, some even getting quite close to achieving it but the empires that formed rarely lasted long after the initial formation due to internal bickering.

The fact you can form the union is a good thing imo since it is what is represented by that age old dream, though I do agree it should only be called the EU if the parent nation is a democracy

It's not a dream shared by a lot of people, not even me. And it's not what the EU was, is, or will be short-mid term at least.

So I agree, it's a nice feature, but it needs a different flag and names.

Implying the EU is a superstate is weird. It's what makes the so-called patriotic parties grow in the eyes of the non-expert public that doesn't know of the EU actually works (because of EU's own fault). In two words: it's fake news.

Anything regarding current political affairs have no place in an entertainment system anyway.

I think it was simply done out of a lack of any better ideas for the name and flag. " European Union " could be considered a generic European superstate name.
spike2071 Mar 9, 2018 @ 7:37am
If it's so upsetting, mod the flag and the name.
Tomthemadone Mar 9, 2018 @ 7:44am
too bad you cant play as the pope in the game and then form european union (CEA style) and be like: I am the EU
Pablo Mar 9, 2018 @ 7:45am
