if you are just starting out, i would recommend building regular divisions consisting of 7 infantry and 2 artillery with any support companies you want.
bigger and better divisions should come later when you have a better knowledge of the game.
about tanks, you dont necessarily need to touch the template( as germany) on the early game if you dont really understand it but if you do want to change the template click the duplicate button on the bottom of the division build menu and make a new template from the one before.
this will allow you to build new divisions without needing to suply your older divisions with new equipment
The developers nerfed soft attack accross the board, and with the new field marshall+general system the entrenchment bonus is ludicrously high making it impossible/suicide to try to attack through a frontline directly with infantry. While it was not recommended before, it could be done but no longer. I would recommend armoured divisions with high breakthrough and possibly going the route of paratroopers/marines.
Right now the defenders advantage is so good it makes attacking very difficult, im hoping for some re-balance. Good luck to you.
This is what happend in real life too!
Belgium was no joke for the germans, but once they got tough france was a n00b
My solution in the previous game was to ally with Italy to invade the southern boarders. I'm always reluctant to do that. I have some medium tanks but I'd consider the divisions more light with some medium support. Maybe I should have kept it strictly light, but I don't think the loss of speed is really having any affect, it's more the rivers. My medium divisions are still training I suppose I could pull them out early. It's frustrating when things are going so well then I start screaming like a lunatic mad man because my troops hit a wall, then I get even more mad because I see that I'm playing Germany and Mr. H. and that's probably how he acted in situations like stalingrad.
that -0.4 to basics inf width can let you make some nice 40 widths with AA AT and Art in them like 4x art 2 or 3 AA and 2 or 3 AT and rest inf but that's normally if i play Russia and don't want to build tanks and an air force. I might try throwing a heavy tank in the mix to make space marines out of them next time i play them.
One divisions only have 7 column of troops?
R u talking about battlefield. It 80 widith right?
