Are Theaters even needed?
In HOI3 the Theaters were marked on the map. The Western Theater for example could be Low countries and France, along with the Eastern Border of Germany. Moving units around the map did NOT change the theater. In HOI4, it seems you add units to a theater, but do not assign an area of the map. If the "Eastern Theater" units move to Russia, they are still in the Eastern Theater. It makes no sense. Are they even used for anything?

You don't have to use them, but you can. That's the point. If you want to split up a Western and Eastern (or Southern, African, Asian, North American, etc) fronts, then you can. If you just want all armies under one theatre, then you can do that too.

In the new dlc you can make a field marshal lead a whole theater and guide generals. Not 100% sure how it works though.

They are not necessary but they can help you organize stuff.

This.

As the USSR for example I might have a list of theatres and battlelines (depending on where I'm planning to fight):
1) European - Finland, Poland/Germany, Romania, Estonia etc
2) Middle East - Turkey, Afghanistan, Sinkiang
3) Far East - Japan, Mongolia
4) Garrisons - Arctic Coastal, Vladivostock Coastal, Black Sea Coastal, Leningrad Coastal
5) Marines

It depends on every individual. I find them useless.
