Support for paratroopers?
Hi!

I want to invade Norway (and later the UK) with German paratroopers (for the first time).

When I make a paratrooper division, can I add support troops to it (like artillery or hospital or so)?
Will it have any effect on the troops at all?

Just seems odd, parachuting artillery or hospitals :)

Adding support equipment doesn't effect the unit in any way besides changing its stats. I know it's weird to jump out of the sky with horse towed artillery, but hey, Paradox is Paradox
Support companies can be paradropped. In a matter of fact, there was bug a while back (maby it still exists) were you could make divisions that existed only of a single support company and that division could actuely paradrop. So it was possible to create endless support company only divisions and paradrop all over the place.

As for it making sense, field hospitals would be regular medical equiptment and while I am not 100% sure, I think there were special desinged artillery pieces (AT, AA, regular arty) for paradropping. And with glider planes even specialy desinged light tanks and trucks could be transported.

Support companies don't contribute to the special forces cap, they can also be paradropped.

So yes, you do want to use support companies on Para's

But there is a catch.
- Support Companies eat supply.
- Support Companies lower the Organisation regain rate of divisions they are attached too.

Considering Paratroopers drop with zero org and are out of supply straight away ... you really do want to pick carefully what to add or else you just piss manpower down the drain.

The less supply they eat and the quicker their org regain, the longer you have to be able to breakthrough and reach them before they fold.

But it have happened in reality. In Operation Market Garden had some British paratroopers was equipped with a lightweight artillery. The Germans were so surprised that they thought their own artillery were shelling them so they sent up flares to warn the "German artillery". All that did however was to give a better aim for the British artillery which was the one shelling the Germans.

Also, brits were able to paradrop 6 tetrarch tanks (however two of them were lost due to planers collision but that's another story. So no, nothing weird in paradroping arty. Have fun.

To his original question, I just generally give Paras an engineer unit. I sometimes think of adding recon but I am not sure the benefits outweigh the supply usage.

Thanks y'all, I'll think about it. I guess it depends on what the paratroopers will have to do. If they actually have to fight, then it's best to add support stuff. If they just need to occupy land, then it's best they don't.

Decisions, decisions! :D
