Exactly my thoughts
I instantly took the Oppose Hitler focus defeating the NAZI's within a year, rebuilt my industry/ army, steamrolled the allies and then beat the Soviets.
Maybe a month after I declared on the allies the Soviets declared on Latvia which called me (and all of Central/ Eastern Europe) into the war due to the anti-soviet pact. I just threw a full army group of infantry on the soviet line and then proceeded to ignore it until I'd defeated the Allies. Once the allies were gone rolling over the Soviets wasn't all that difficult and after that there was no point continuing since everything else would just be a joke.
So no, it's not impossible.
My army at it's peak was 2 army groups of infantry, 1 army of medium tanks and 1 paratroop division, the allies together matched my division count, though almost half of mine was on the soviet front so in practice they had more (my tank army was also only 12 divisions rather than 24 at this point), the Soviets as always had more divisions.
Division count doesn't matter, just make sure you have enough infantry to hold the front line and use tanks to create breaks in the enemy lines and create encirclement's for your infantry to kill off.
I didn't even bother rebuilding my navy (and never used what little I did have) and I had a fairly small airforce, yet the Allies were easy to beat and the biggest problem with the Soviets was supply issues.
By becoming either democratic or neutral you can more easily temper who you go after. You may even join the Allies as either ideology completely removing them as a potential enemy. This is the strength of that branch.
Instead of doing rapid, and somewhat forced, early expansion YOU choose how and where to expand.
Ally Austria = instant annexation
Ally Hungary and Romania = two satellites (with focus)
France turns communist = Allies won't intervene in Europe
Italy can be turned neutral
etc.
As for the scars of the civil war. If you haven't completely regained your losses by 1938 you are definately doing something wrong. Yes, you will be in a weakened state for a year after the end of the war and you will lose out on around 200k manpower (your losses and nazi losses) depending on how well you do. Just spam cheap cavalry divisions then change their template to infantry once they are deployed, you have plenty of time to train them before the wars kick off.
You lose half the fleet, but that is primarily the surface fleet which is outmatched by any other major anyway, except for the soviet navy which you will still beat with half your navy. It's a non-issue in my opinion.
