Next check how many divisions you can use in a naval invasion by looking at the Naval research tab, at the bottom there are 'Transport' techs. You should have the first tech by default.
Then get the number of divisions you are able or want to use for the invasion into a new army. Whilst you have the army selected, click the 'Naval Invasion Order' icon (which is an anchor), left click the port you want the invasion to originate and right click the province to wish to land on.
If you're still having trouble, hover your cursor over the 'Activate' arrow on the invasion force and that should tell you why.
Also make sure that the province you choose to land at has enough supply, otherwise they'll get pushed right back into the ocean. Usually it's best to just invade a port directly but sometimes people like to land next to a port and attack from land, that's up to you though.
Thanks, PuckishRogue. I've been playing for quite a while and yet I learn something new all the time.
