Only one front, and you know you are going to get attacked (if you don't give in to russias demands) in ca 1940. There are a lot of countries where no conflict will happen if you don't search for it, so it's nice to know that it's comming for you.
Turn to the Axis or the allies, there is a lot of possibilities for diplomatics and the best part, your productions are limted, so you have to decide early, and then the next go I'll try to push the limits by adding fighters, anti tank, anti air, radars, and so on.
Hardest part for me when I first played was that I always picked a nation that I thought would be cool, but then there where to many ways to go.
Germany is likely to get overwhelmed if you screw up, but otherwise has very powerful industry, manpower, and military and gets a great opportunity to practice each aspect of warfare since the French are reasonably powerful on the ground while the British are powerful at sea and in the air (just remember to build plenty of fighters).
Italy is the weakest of the 7 major powers, has a very vulnerable coastline, and has to attack through mountains to invade either Germany or France. However, it also has those mountains to defend itself, starts with a big navy, and can tip the balance of power a lot if it stops being fascist (since otherwise, you probably want to know what you're doing in naval warfare in order to not lose badly to both the British and French navies).
France is hard unless you go fascist (since then Germany ignores you) since you need to know how to fight a larger army, Britain covers way too much ground for a beginner, the USSR is powerful but is crippled by the Great Purge early on (or a civil war), Japan doesn't have much room to expand other than by sea fighting major powers (or the wonderfully-gruesome advance across Siberia westward to Moscow, probably the slowest war you could ever ask for), and China has no technology and a powerful enemy to beat.
The various minor powers are all then pretty hard to play with, since you don't have the industry or manpower to really pick what you want to make (if you're messing around at least; some minor powers like Brazil can develop pretty quickly into powerful nations while others like Sweden have plenty of industry and tech but just lack the manpower to back it up).
I'd lean in favor of picking Italy if you want a smaller and less-overwhelming start, and either Germany or the US if you don't mind having a ton of stuff to think about (since they can both handle it pretty easily). You can also turn France fascist and just skip WWII, since they're basically Italy without being trapped in the Mediterranean then (and no one besides Germany and Italy--who usually can't do it anyways--has wargoals against France). If you don't mind building ships, then Japan is less constricted than Italy and also gets a big war against China to play around in.

After watching these, start the tutorial again. You should have no problems to follow/understand it now. Also there is a reason why you play as Italy in the tutorial...
