How to make it run in OpenGL mode?
I'm on a school laptop that doesn't allow me to get the correct version of DirectX. It does work with OpenGL games though. If anyone knows how to get hoi to run with OpenGL that'd be just great.

I've tried that but it seems to just not launch when i press play on steam. It does the first time setup but then just crashes

This might be caused by something else though.

@all: If you use Windows and HoI4 works on your computer you could do the OP a favor by testing if the game still works if you add -opengl to your launch options.

@OP: Does EU4 work on that laptop?

I've tried EU4 aswell and no, I assume since they are on the same engine they use the same DirectX no?

The game itself works with OpenGL (macOS and GNU/Linux use it to run HoI4, but also EU4 etc.). There might be some problem with it on Windows, but I rather don't think so.

It might be a problem with the C++ redistributables or something like that (which affects both EU4 and HOI4) instead. I really can't say.

If one of your friends uses Windows as well and plays HoI4 ask him/her to test it with the -opengl launch flag. If doesn't work it's probably not possible (anymore), but if it works it should be possible to get it working on your laptop too.

HawkNinja: Hey
HawkNinja: Can I get a favor
prussianjaeger: ?
HawkNinja: Can you try to launch hoi with the -opengl tag in the launch options?
prussianjaeger: i already did that it works

Apparently it works for him. I'm not sure what wrong

Me neither to be honest, but it really might have to do with the C++ redistributables.

You could try this:

Please go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Europa Universalis IV\_CommonRedist\DirectX\Jun2010\ and run dxsetup.exe
Please go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Europa Universalis IV\_CommonRedistvcredist\2010\ and run vcredist.exe and vcredist_x64.exe

I use Windows 10 Education. None of those work as the admin (the school) doesn't allow installations on the laptops.

Ah, sorry... where it says "Europa Universalis IV" it should say "Hearts of Iron IV" instead.

But maybe you mean that you don't have the necessary rights to run those files?
똑똑한 27 DIC 2016 a las 18:07
Just create a seperate partition for gaming, and install a second copy of windows there with yourself as admin. Schoolwork hardly takes up much space, so you should have plenty of spare harddrive space to work with. wipe the partition and remerge it when you have to hand it back in.

Your school admin may have put other kinds of barriers in place to prevent installing unauthorized software.
