Watch some lets plays is your best bet. Try like Sweden for a first play through. You can stay neutral go axis or commie and take over scandanavia. Keep an eye on how events play out in europe and you'll see how things go most of the time and use those experiences in your other games.

France seems to be impossible to play as democratic

Playing Germany might be a bit overwhelming if you want to learn. Playing a minor, using the quite strong and straight forward generic focus tree is probably a good way to learn. Also watching let's plays are a good way.

You could also restart the tutorial, but don't do stuff before you're told to to :) I was not aware it would stall if you actually got Ethiopia to surrender too early. Good to know, thanks!

Do you have any suggestions for what country I should pick?

I used to play a lot of Sweden to begin with (being Swedish and all).

Since all non-majors use the same generic focus tree it's not that much difference really. Just make sure you go for the industry focus quickly, go fascists or communist so you can do stuff, build infantry and take it from there :)

I suggest Italy. You can support Germany and if something goes wrong Germany usually helps.

My favorite countries are Spain and Turkey. Both have a reasonably sized population, a defensible location, and the ability to expand without causing a world war. Spain would probably be more interesting, but more difficult, due to the civil war. I've defeated the Axis and the Soviets with them previously due to their access to Tungsten for massed artillery. I've still been concerned about attempting Germany due to the number of fronts and brigades to manage.

As a final tip if you attempt Germany again - The French have fortified the border with the Maginot line. This series of fortifications are nearly invincible, which is why the Germans attempted to attack France through Belgium in both world wars.

If you want to play a larger role in international politics Italy is a wonderful choice.

I just got the game too, and I'm finding the Community Guides very helpful. There is a game guide for beginners that shows you what all the buttons do and how to use your land, air and sea forces.

Get yourself a snack and watch some videos. :)

You may find Youtuber shenryyr helpful. He goes through several campaigns and shows how the game works. Don't be discouraged. I've played several campaigns and I'm still learning.

I just got this game, it's my first time playing these series of games and I thought I'd jump in with the latest one since I heard people say it's easier. I have no idea what I'm doing...I ♥♥♥♥ed up the tutorial because I somehow took ethiopia before the tutorial told me too so now I'm stuck because it's waiting for Ethiopia to surrender but it already did so I thought I'd jump in to a single player game, it was on easiest difficulty, I played as Germany, had no idea what to do. I tried inviting Austria and japan and spain to my faction since they were pretty much entirely fascist but they all failed, and then I attacked France and they kicked my ♥♥♥ and I lost. The game seems fun but ffs it's so complicated and hard lol

I was the very same way a few weeks ago. I am new to the whole Paradox games and had to learn little by little. I got going by watching YOUTUBE VIDEOS! You gotta have some patience and sit back and watch some of thew TUTORIALS, and or do what I did and play n watch the TUTORIAL videos at the same time... This game is a lot of fun and kills a lot of time.

I am a very detail oriented type person so these are my type of games lol STRATEGY!! :)

By the way in my first game I played as GERMANY on EASY. But what I did was watch the Tutorial Videos as I played along.. I paused the heck out of it and kept looking up everything that I got stuck with. Oh and I took over the world as Nazi Germany :( And beheaded Trump.

Best way is to do what you have and just start a game and pick it up as you go. You will spend months getting to know this game and even then it will bite you back occassionally but there is the wiki for info and you can ask here for anything. It is a very fun game once you get into it.

Sweden is your best choice. As long as you don't ally with any other counties, you will never get attached. That way you can mess around with everything and get a feel for the game. It's worked for me so far.
