keep them supplied and don't send them into the desert, jungle, or the tundra

Terrain attrition is unavoidable. Supply attrition means you have too many units in one place.
Maintenance companies help, as does increasing reliability on tanks and such. You'll lose a percentage of your equipment every day based off of your reliability and the % attrition.

More divisions on one region will make the region run out of supplies faster. Hence more attrition.

Logistics companies on all divisions, and maintainence companies on all armored divisions.

Also, don't train any of your troops. Someone's always breaking their equipment or getting themselves killed.

Excellent point, Training should only be done in peacetime/peaceful theatres.

Fighting in snowy, forested terrain is a nightmare. I recommend Recon and Engineering company in addition to logistics company, for the movement boosts.
