What is the point of promoting?
Seing as though I have only played big countires with famous generals, I don't understand the point of the 'promote' button with generals. It wipes all their traits for an extra skill level. Are skill levels more important than traits?

it makes the promoted general capable of having a lot more troops under his command.

some odd fools call it roleplay and like their chief of army to have a decent face.

They actually lose a skill level. It's all for creating a field marshal, which some countries don't start with. Field marshals have a completely different set of traits from generals, so it's necessary.

It's usually not an issue. Once you're ready to have a field marshal (IE, a military front/operation that requires over 80 troops), the field marshal will level pretty quickly from the sustained combat that larger theaters bring. Until then, a cadre of generals works just fine.
